Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden‘s son, owes his ex-wife more than $1.7 million in spousal support, legal fees and interest since their 2017 divorce, according to documents shared with Axios.
Hunter Biden’s ex-wife Kathleen Buhle is expected to testify in his gun case starting Monday and sometime during his Sept. 5 tax case.
A court found that Hunter Biden breached his divorce agreement in a January 2021 ruling — the agreement called for him to pay Buhle $37,000 a month plus 50% of anything he made over $875,000 annually.
Court documents stated that Hunter Biden didn’t pay Buhle the annual spousal support after he made $2.4 and $2.1 million in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Therefore, he was ordered to pay her $1.1 million plus 6% interest.
In addition, Hunter Biden mostly failed to pay Buhle her monthly alimony after she filed a civil suit against him in 2018, adding to his debt total. His lawyers said he wanted to pay his ex-wife but didn’t have the money amid his drug addiction.
In June 2020, the court reprimanded Hunter Biden for trying to delay a resolution “for as long as possible” after he didn’t pay a court-ordered $259,000 plus interest by April. That July, Hunter Biden’s lawyers implied Buhle was blackmailing him with a threat to embarrass his father’s presidential campaign.
“It is likely hoped that there will be some financial intervention, funded by some third-party, to help Mr. Biden with these obligations, in an effort to avoid the anticipated embarrassment to his father’s presidential campaign,” Hunter Biden’s lawyer Sarah Mancinelli wrote in July 2020.
“There will be no intervention satisfying Mr. Biden’s obligations,” she added.
Buhle’s lawyer, Wendy Schwartz, says Hunter owes Buhle more than $2.9 million.

“Ms. Buhle previously told this court that the expense and emotional toll this has had on her is enormous and appears to be never-ending. Those feelings have not changed,” Schwartz wrote in an April 2023 court filing.
Hunter will face federal tax charges in California in addition to his gun case, which alleges Hunter lied about his drug use when he bought a firearm.
