Why I Came from Winnipeg to Train at Fort Langley Air

Our team talked to Winnipeg client, pilot Kenton Pilek, to find out why he flew to BC to train at Fort Langley Air. Why head to BC to get his float rating? Several of us spent our early years walking to school in the MB winter, so we had a hunch that the weather had something to do with it. Turns out, it was just part of it. Congrats Kenton on your float rating!

What inspired you to get your floatplane rating and why did you choose FLA?
I wanted to get my float rating so I can travel the backcountry parts of Canada, particularly Manitoba.  I chose FLA due to the training being completed in a C180, which is the type of plane I plan to use. In addition,  having the ability to take the training in the offseason was an added bonus.

What is it that draws pilots to floatplanes?
For me, it’s the draw of access to undeveloped locations.

What was your favorite part of the training process?
Flying the 180 on floats.

How do you plan to use your new skills moving forward? Hobby or career?
Flying will be purely a hobby. I don’t have plans at the moment to be a professional pilot.

Do you have any plans to get your DHC-2 Beaver certification?
I didn’t, but now that I know you have them available,  I may put it on my “bucket list”!

Train at Fort Langley Air and get started on your seaplane rating today on a C-180 or a DHC-2 Beaver! Call +1 (504) 513-9886 for more details.
