The Maryland Democratic primary is closing in, and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks isn’t pulling any punches on rival Rep. David Trone (D-MD).
In an interview with WTOP, Alsobrooks continued her recurring attack on Trone that he and his business have donated to “radical Republicans” who support “anti-choice” policies.
Alsobrooks cited Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) and Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) as anti-abortion politicians Trone has donated to. According to a 2016 Washington Post article, Trone donated more than $150,000, mostly to Republicans, in states where his business, Total Wine & More, operates.
EMILY’s List, an organization dedicated to electing Democratic women who support abortion access, said last year that Trone donated nearly $500,000 to “anti-choice” Republicans.
An EMILY’s List super PAC, Women Vote!, recently launched a $2 million ad buy attacking Trone for his abortion record and emphasizing his donations to anti-abortion Republicans like Abbott.
“David Trone and his companies gave half a million dollars to extreme and MAGA Republicans to win their elections,” a new ad says. “David Trone cares more about his bottom line than our rights.”
Trone’s personal wealth has funded most of his campaign and kept Alsobrooks from surpassing him in fundraising. He has reportedly spent more than $57 million of his own money to fund his Senate campaign. Where Trone fails is his lack of endorsements, something Alsobrooks has had no problems with — gaining the support of Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD), Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and most of Maryland’s Democratic House delegation.

Alsobrooks recently gained ground with an Emerson College poll that showed her leading by 1 point in a survey of Maryland likely voters, and that support increased to 3 points when undecided voters were forced to choose. Before that, Trone consistently led in the polls, but he still holds about a 6-point average polling advantage.
Whoever wins the May 14 Democratic primary is slated to face likely Republican nominee former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who is expected to mount a significant challenge in the primarily blue state. Head-to-head polling has varied widely, but a pair of recent polls favors Trone and Alsobrooks against Hogan, with the former performing slightly better in both.
