My son drove up to the Monsal Head car park, with me, which is situated near the Monsal Head Hotel, for a walk along the cliffs using a foot path directly out of the car park. Immediately the views across the valley are captivating. A word of warning, be very careful along this route if you choose the high cliff path. Dogs should be under close control and children kept close, the cliff edge is not fenced. My son and I found this a perfect place for our photos, and Bandit the dog stayed very close.
Walking from the car park, past the hotel you’ll find another beautiful view point and a path down into the valley along lots of steps until reaching the viaduct below and the old railway tunnel. The Monsal Trail in total is 8.5 miles in length, between Coombs Road in Bakewell to Blackwell Mill in Chee Dale. The trail has become much more fun since the old railway tunnels have been reopened for walkers and cyclists. There are many interconnected trails and villages to explore along the route, including Tideswell Dale, Cressbrook Mill, Litton Mill, Little Longstone, and Great Longstone to mention a few.

Getting to Monsal Head
1. By Car:
– From Manchester: Take the A6 southbound towards Buxton. Follow the signs for Monsal Head, and the journey should take approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.
– From Sheffield: Follow the A625 towards Bakewell. At Bakewell, take the A6 towards Buxton, and you’ll see signs for Monsal Head. The drive should take about 40 minutes.
– Parking: There is a car park with 89 spaces available at Monsal Head, but it can get crowded during peak times. Arriving early is recommend. Prices start at £1.50 for the first hour, up to £6 for 24hrs.
