Today’s a Sad Day for Frasier Fans

It’s a sad day for Frasier fans as Season 2 of the revival series comes to an end with Episode 10, “Father Christmas.” The show has not been officially picked up for a third outing.

Frasier is essentially a sequel to the 1993 sitcom of the same name, which allowed Kelsey Grammer’s Cheers character to leave the confines of the famous Boston bar behind. The original show followed the psychiatrist Frasier Crane as he returned to his hometown of Seattle to pursue a career in talk radio. He also reconnects with his father, Martin (John Mahoney), a retired cop, and his younger brother, Niles (David Hyde Pierce), who is also a psychiatrist.

The revival picks up “shortly after the death of Frasier’s father, the end of his nearly 20-year relationship, and his famous Chicago television show,” the official synopsis reads. Hoping to start his third act, the famous psychiatrist returns to Boston to reconnect with his son, Frederick (Jack Cutmore-Scott). He also takes a professorship at Harvard University, where he reconnects with an old colleague, Allan (Nicholas Lyndhurst), and moves into Freddy’s apartment building after purchasing it.

The Frasier Revival Gives New Life To A Familiar Character

Along with several new cast members, the sitcom also features appearances by actors who appeared in the original show. Peri Gilpin, who reprised her role as Frasier’s close friend and former co-worker Roz Doyle in both seasons of the revival, recently said that she always hoped the show would return. “I always loved playing [Roz] and I hoped I would get to someday again,” she explained. “I love playing her at this age and coming back to it and figuring out what she would be like now.”

Fans who hoped to see Niles and his wife Daphne Moon (Jane Leeves) in the Frasier reboot were disappointed when Pierce revealed that prior commitments prevented him from reprising his role in the new sitcom. However, executive producer Chris Harris said their absence allowed the show to become its own thing. “Instead of having one foot in the past and one foot in the present, it did help us to shift focus and say, ‘OK, let’s really make this a third chapter,” he said.

Season 2 also sees Frasier head back to Seattle to tie up some loose ends. According to Harris, Grammer felt it was necessary for the story. “Kelsey felt like [Frasier] had some unfinished business there,” he explained. “It kind of feels like [he] romanticized Seattle in his head, but obviously, it’s just not the same place. Finding an organic reason to go to Seattle – helping Roz organize a KACL tribute special – was helpful. And seeing all those friendly faces and Café Nervosa and seeing McGinty’s was just fun.”

The final episode of Frasier Season 2 is streaming on Paramount+.
