Everything We Know About the Twilight TV Series Midnight Sun (So Far)

Bella and Edward are making their way to the small screen with an animated series in the works by Lionsgate Productions and Netflix. The Twilight saga follows a young teenager, Isabella Swan, who moves from Arizona to the small town of Forks, Washington, and falls in love with two young men. The only issue is that neither of them is human. Edward was an immortal vampire, and Jacob was a werewolf fighting for her love. Team Edward fans are in for a treat with a new Twilight TV series that appears to focus on Stephanie Meyer’s novel The Midnight Sun, a retelling of the first Twilight book from Edward’s perspective.

The novels had a cult following, but the Twilight movies starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart as Edward Cullen and Bella Swan launched a multi-billion franchise and made these stars household names. The Twilight saga is one of the most profitable franchises in history, with the five films, Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1, and Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2, earning over $3 billion at the box office. While there isn’t much information available, Netflix confirmed that the project, Midnight Sun, is moving forward as planned.

Midnight Sun Will Be an Animated TV Series From the Twilight Saga

It’s been over a decade since the Twilight saga came to a close with Twilight Breaking Dawn-Part 2, and while fans were devastated at the end of the blockbuster adaptation, they never lost hope that the Cullens would be back one day. With vampires’ tendency to live forever and the rage of TV show revivals and reboots going around in Hollywood, it was only a matter of time before Twilight would make a comeback. In 2023, Lionsgate TV confirmed through their vice chairman, Michael Burns, that the Twilight series will be an animated series. He said:

We’re going to go out with the ‘Twilight’ series, an animated series, I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.

Alongside Twilight, other remakes currently in the works include a Harry Potter TV series on Max, which will consist of author J.K. Rowling as an executive producer, The Chronicles of Narnia, directed by Barbie’s Greta Gerwig, and Lord of The Ring’s Rings of Power on Prime Video. While Rings of Power hasn’t fared well with its core fan base, this Twilight adaptation might have better luck as the Twilight films still have a hold on pop culture today.

The Twilight remake is coming soon, and this could finally give the chance for fans to get some aspects of the story explored even more.

The Plot of This Series Will Be Different From the Twilight Movies

The Twilight books were a resounding success, with millions worldwide hooked on Stephanie Meyer’s words about the young Isabella Swan, who fell in love with a vampire almost a hundred years her senior. The first Twilight novel follows Bella as she moves to the pacific northwest and gets entangled with supernatural creatures. Her relationship with Edward Cullen puts her life in danger and strains her relationship with her new friends and father.

While the young adult novel was exciting to read, it received lukewarm reviews for its depiction of teenagers’ behavior and lackluster character development. There were also several details about the love story that fans had problems with, from the numerous plot holes to Edward and Bella’s questionable age difference. Edward’s stalker tendencies wouldn’t fly in today’s climate as romantic. Several of these issues weren’t addressed in The Twilight Saga films, but with this upcoming animated series, there is once again hope that Meyer will change things for the better.

How to Watch The Twilight Movies in Order

Twilight took the world by storm when the first film premiered in 2008. The iconic series that kicked off the vampire craze is worth a rewatch.

The Twilight animated series will be an adaptation of the 2020 novel by Meyer, Midnight Sun. This novel retells the events of the first Twilight book from Edward Cullen’s perspective. The book intended to give fans a deeper look into Edward’s life and his thought process while pursuing Bella in Forks. Even though many critics panned this novel because they saw it as lazy to rewrite the same story, Twilight fans appreciated that it was much better written and filled in several gaps from the first book.

With how wild the Team Edward vs Team Jacob debate got during the height of the films, it was evident that fans were dying to know more about Edward, and Meyer took the opportunity to strike while the iron was hot by writing Midnight Sun in 2008. Unfortunately, Meyer halted releasing this novel because chapters of the book leaked online, but she would later publish the story in 2020. Midnight Sun also gives a better understanding of other characters and brings more of Edward’s violent and vampire nature to the forefront. He is a predator, after all, and seeing him without the rose-colored glasses of Bella in love is a more refreshing take on his character and motivations.

An Animated Series Offers More Potential in Storytelling

While fans hoped Pattinson and Stewart or some of the other cast members would play a part in this series, it is unlikely. The mentioned actors have long since shed their Twilight identity for much bigger projects. Nevertheless, fans will still see a version of Bella and Edward in a world with endless storytelling possibilities. With the imaginative creativity available, it will likely be more visually pleasing than the live-action version.

An animated Twilight series will offer a more book-accurate depiction of these characters’ appearance, from the werewolf’s size to the vampire’s otherworldly beauty. Edwards’s sparkling skin could look more like what fans envisioned in the books, and if this series gets more seasons, hopefully, Renesmee will get a much-needed face-lift from the CGI baby in Twilight: Breaking Dawn-Part 2. There could also be changes that Meyer will be willing to make in this adaptation years after publishing the book and getting reviews from her readers. However, one thing fans are afraid of is that some changes, especially to Bella’s character and her relationship with Edward, could push away loyal fans.

Twilight’s Reboot Can Be Inspired by Another Supernatural Series

The Twilight Saga is getting a reboot on the small screen, and a different supernatural series provided the perfect blueprint for the TV adaptation.

An animated series also holds more potential regarding what can be shown and how detailed and gory the vampires can be, considering all the limitations of the previous adaptations set in the real world. In this series, Edward may be as obsessive as he was in the books since the toxic dynamic between him and Bella was one thing fans were interested in. It’s more like the Vampire Diaries’ Elena and Damon’s unhealthy romance than Elena and Stefan’s. With more visual accompaniment, fans could also better understand the Volturi, the werewolves’ history, and Edward’s early life in more detail than was possible in the movies. Although dates haven’t been set, The Twilight animated series could be released much sooner because of how quick animated series are to make and edit. With the fantastic work Pattinson is currently doing in the voice acting world, it wouldn’t be such a stretch to think he might lend his voice to this animated series.

What the Twilight Series Can Learn From Charmed’s Failed Reboot

Charmed (2018) failed when it came to engaging dialogue and character development; hopefully, Twilight’s reboot fares better in this regard.

Erik Feig, the former Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president, and Wyck Godfrey are attached to executive produce this Twilight series. Godfrey’s production company, Temple Hill Banner, was behind producing the Twilight Saga and will likely do its best to recreate the magic of this worldwide phenomenon on TV. Meyer is also attached as an executive producer on the show, so fans do not need to worry about it being faithful to the source material with her involved. Sinead Daly from Tell Me Lies, The Get Down, and The Walking Dead: World Beyond is also attached to write and executive produce the series.

There is no word yet on cast members attached to the project. When asked about the reboot during an episode of the Chicks in the Office podcast, Lautner said he didn’t think rebooting the Twilight saga was a good idea. Twilight was a product of its time, and while his reservations are valid, studios aren’t going to lose out on a chance to make money from such a profitable franchise. Pattinson is currently working on Max’s The Batman 2, while Stewart’s work has extended way beyond the franchise, working in critically acclaimed indie films that have made everyone see her for the talented actress she is.
