10 Funniest Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Scenes, Ranked

Only Murders in the Building just wrapped up its fourth season with its greatest and most dangerous mystery yet. This show has been a hit for fans in more ways than one. On the one hand, it’s an excellent mystery show with plenty of clues, twists and turns for audiences to get excited over. On the other hand, it’s incredibly hilarious.

This season doesn’t disappoint, with some of the funniest moments in the entire series. With a brilliantly creative premise, season four of Only Murders in the Building had its audience laughing out loud every episode.

Charles, Mabel and Oliver Meet the Actors Playing Charles, Mabel and Oliver

While the first two seasons of Only Murders in the Building focused on the titular situations, and season three added an Oliver Putnam musical turned fatal, season four takes the gang to Hollywood. After hearing that a film adaptation of the leads will be made based on their adventures through the fatal building, the three head down to Hollywood to see exactly what’s up.

10 Biggest Only Murders in the Building Plot Twists (So Far)

Only Murders in the Building has managed to captivate audiences in a way that few shows do. This is thanks to the twists that always keep it fresh.

At a party, the producer, played by Molly Shannon, introduces Charles, Mabel and Oliver to the actors who will be playing them. They’re Eugene Levy for Charles, Eva Longoria for Mabel and Zach Galifianakis for Oliver. While Eugene and Eva seemed excited about working with their counterparts, Zach could not have been more annoyed with Oliver. It’s a hilarious meeting that sets up the rest of the series for plenty of laughs.

Charles Crashes a Drone Investigating the Brothers Sisters

Vince, Ana, and Inez sit together at a table in Only Murders in the Building Season 4.

Charles’ attempt at flying a drone goes disastrously wrong. Tasked with using it to spy on a suspect, Charles approaches the challenge with misplaced confidence, despite his inexperience. He struggles with the controls, and the drone jerks awkwardly, failing to go in the right direction. In his panic, Charles wildly presses buttons, which only worsens the situation. The drone spins out of control, barely missing walls and furniture, as Charles stammers and anxiously shouts at it, trying to steer it back on track.

The comedy builds as Oliver and Mabel watch in horror, both exasperated and amused by Charles’ escalating failure. His overconfidence and helpless fumbling are classic Charles, adding another layer to the trio’s quirky approach to solving mysteries in the most uncoordinated way possible.

The Only Murders Trio Makes a Hollywood Life Rights Deal

One of the most difficult things a mystery story can effectively do is introduce the suspects without it feeling forced or obvious. As it’s the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building, the show has this formula locked in and ready to go. This season, new characters come from the West Tower across from where the main characters live and through a movie being created about the trio’s investigative lives.

Everything We Know About Only Murders in the Building Season 5

Only Murders in the Building season 4 ended with, well, another murder, but with a season five confirmed, the victim will get their due.

The audience gets to meet all different types of characters related to this fictitious movie, from Molly Shannon playing a vivacious and sleazy producer to the actors portraying the trio in the film. Other characters include sibling directors, the Brothers Sisters, and the writer of the film. By the time the life rights of the trio are being discussed, they’re none the wiser that there’s been a murder, so the three are as awkward as audiences know them to be. In a scene that is hysterical right from the beginning, Charles and Oliver attempt to negotiate the price of their life rights despite Mabel’s annoyed and awkward attitude.

In the third episode of season four, “Two for the Road,” the crime-fighting trio teams up with their actor counterparts to investigate different suspects around the Arconia. Mabel and her actress, Eva Longoria, go off to investigate a character who loves Christmas year-round. Oliver and his actor, Zach Galifianakis, go through an Oliver Putnam boot camp to learn how to better play him in the movie. And finally, Charles and his actor, Eugene Levy, investigate Vince Fish, a man who never ceases to have pink eye, played by the amazing Richard Kind.

This entire scene is so simple and still so effectively funny. Eugene and Charles need to find out if Vince really does have pink eye. In order to do that, the pair concoct a few ridiculous plans that don’t end up working. These plans include wearing eye patches along with Vince and spitting water in his face so he has to remove the eye patch. None of it works, and Vince just shows the two his disgusting, infected eye. The scene is simply three comedy legends having a simple, silly conversation, and it’s incredibly effective.

Jan Returns to Haunt Charles

Jan Bellows in an Elevator in Only Murders in the Building

In season one of Only Murders in the Building, it was revealed that Charles’ new girlfriend, Jan, was a vicious killer with a lust for blood and romance. Her reputation as a cold-blooded killer grew as the series went on. There was a small relationship between Jan and Sazz Pataki, Charles’ stunt double and the victim of a horrible murder this season. At first, the trio wonders if Jan might’ve broken out of prison and murdered Sazz, but this question is quickly answered when Jan drops in on Charles alone in his apartment.

Even when terrified, Steve Martin’s Charles is hilarious. While Jan threateningly confronts him, Charles carefully and obviously hides anything Jan can kill Charles with. As the hilarious scene unfolds, Charles learns that it was not Jan who killed Sazz but someone else who might have been trying to kill Charles. And while Charles tries to message for help, he eventually fails. Jan escapes the apartment as she’s hunted by the police, and Charles is left confused and hysterically dumbfounded.

Mabel and Eva Longoria Confront the Phony Christmas Man

While investigating the suspects on the other side of the Arconia, Mabel decided to specifically focus on a man they call Christmas-All-the-Time Guy. Played by the immeasurably talented Kumail Nanjiani, the character seemingly celebrates Christmas all day, every day. And after Mabel finds a piece of Christmas tinsel at the crime scene, she decides to investigate him, but not without Eva Longoria tagging along to learn the ropes of how to be Mabel Mora.

Eva Longoria had been cast in the fictional Only Murders in the Building movie that’s being made at the same time as the investigation. Mabel isn’t interested in entertaining Eva but eventually lets her tag along and join the investigation. As expected, this goes hilariously wrong. Mabel attempts to get the truth out of the suspect, but Eva takes things too far and confronts Christmas-All-the-Time Guy with his own gun. She demands the truth right then and there, which turns out to simply be that he doesn’t even like Christmas. It’s a hilarious scene between three incredible comedy performers.

Melissa McCarthy Hilariously Plays Charles’ Sister

Doreen looks at someone in Only Murders in the Building.

Melissa McCarthy’s character bursts onto the scene with unforgettable, chaotic energy, as she always does. From the moment she appears, she’s loud, impulsive, and hilariously unaware of social boundaries, instantly throwing the trio off balance. Her unpredictable behavior, combined with her quirky humor, leaves everyone wondering what she’ll do next.

Who Is Sazz in Only Murders in the Building?

Only Murders in The Building’s newest season puts fan-favorite character, Sazz, at the center of the mystery. But who is she?

Her introduction is laugh-out-loud funny as she commandeers conversations and over-shares bizarre personal anecdotes. McCarthy’s comedic timing shines, adding her to the list of incredible side characters for this series.

Oliver Teaches Zach Galifianakis How to Be Oliver

Only Murders in the Building Main Cast

  • Steve Martin as Charles Haden-Savage
  • Martin Short as Oliver Putnam
  • Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora
  • Michael Cyril Creighton as Howard Morris

Oliver Putnam, played by the hilarious and lovely Martin Short, is an extremely eccentric and charismatic creative who can’t be contained with mere words. And when it came time for a movie to be made about Oliver’s detective life, famous comedy actor Zach Galifianakis was cast. Now, to be specific, Galifianakis is playing a version of himself within the show, one who is not a fan of Oliver’s. Right from the premiere episode, Zach disliked Oliver and was very openly doing this role only for the money. But all of that changed when Oliver took Zach under his flamboyant wing.

In a scene set to the theme song from the 1986 sitcom Perfect Strangers, which ends up being an integral clue, Zach finally lets Oliver teach him his odd and eccentric ways. In a hilarious scene that sees the pair finally getting along, Oliver takes Zach all over the Arconia on a fun day of learning and friendship.

Paul Rudd Returns to the Series After Being Murdered in Season 3

Only Murders in the Building is host to a cavalcade of huge stars, like Meryl Streep, Amy Schumer, Melissa McCarthy, Sting, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Kind and most popularly, Paul Rudd. In season 3, Rudd played the whodunnit victim for the season, Ben Glenroy. He was the typical Hollywood diva and was murdered after being pushed down an elevator shaft by the killer. However, that didn’t stop the show from having him return in the new season, but this time as a completely different character.

10 Best Friendships In Only Murders in the Building, Ranked

Only Murders in the Building is about the unlikely friendship between two older men and a young woman. But there are other notable friendships, too.

In the fourth episode, “The Stunt Man,” the trio investigates Sazz’s last known whereabouts at a stunt man-only bar downtown. While there, they met some unfriendly faces, but among them was Glen Stubbins. Glen, also played by Rudd, was Ben’s former stunt double, now out of a job. The whole scene is hilarious and a perfect surprise for fans. Glen will become more integral to the plot as the show continues, but Rudd’s reintroduction to the series is classic.

Charles and Oliver Prove That There Is More Than One Killer

In the fifth episode of the new season, “Adaptation,” the trio of podcasting detectives run into a snag with the case. When cross-examining notes with Rex, the writer of the movie that’s being made about them, they all realize that what went down on that fatal night couldn’t have been accomplished alone. Charles first theorizes exactly how it could have happened in a fantasy sequence that progressively gets more and more ridiculous in all the best ways. By the end of it, he’s hilariously imagining himself as some James Bond-like killer.

Charles, needing to prove himself as some alpha male in this episode, elects to retrace the killer’s tracks within the same amount of time. The audience can’t help but laugh at Charles’ running clothes and his difficulty enduring the physical task. Oliver hurries his way outside of the Arconia, yelling and passing some children, and runs into a furious John McEnroe. And by the time he returns to the room, Oliver is over the time limit by thirty minutes. It’s the most hilarious moment in the entire season, and also a key clue in helping the trio solve the case.
