If you’re not familiar, Global Entry is a program administered by the U.S. government. It allows you to enter the U.S. much easier once you’re approved. It’s a lengthy application process where you are asked where have you visited for several years among other questions.
But it’s worth is as once you’re approved, it’s smooth sailing when you return to the U.S. either via air or land borders. You can also apply for something called NEXUS which allows easier entry into Canada. There are also other similar programs around the world for which you can apply.
I’ve been a member of this program since its inception in 2008. It’s a very worthwhile program and I highly recommend it.
Besides, it also gives you TSAPrecheck for free. TSAPrecheck is a program that allows you to use a separate lane at airport security. Usually, this line is shorter. Also, you do not have to take out your electronics and liquids and you can keep your shoes on.
Effective October 2024, the price will increase from $100 for five years to $120.
Currently, several credit cards like the American Express Platinum card, will give you a $100 statement credit if you use the card to pay for it. At the time of this writing, it is unknown if this will increase to $120. But $100 off is still a good savings.
The program sends you an email to remind you when it is expiring and gives you renewal instructions.
After you’ve done the initial application online, if you are conditionally approved, you are instructed to setup an in-person appointment at any of the centers across the U.S. Usually located inside the airports or in the downtown area.
Once you get interviewed and are approved, you can then use the Global Entry kiosks on re-entry into the U.S. as well as TSAPrecheck.
When you are ready for renewal, you are sometimes required to do a face-to-face interview, via Zoom or no interview is required.
It’s a worthwhile investment if you want to save time when you travel.
