After playing catch up since the start of tax season, the number of individual income tax returns received by the Internal Revenue Service finally surpassed the same period last year, up 0.2% as of March 29, 2024 (90,315,000 in 2024, versus 90,111,000 in 2023), a figure which could have been higher, but for the shorter filing season this year (61 days versus 68).
Meanwhile, the average direct deposit refund amount reached $3,124, up 5.3% on the same period in 2023.
