Taking care of our spiritual needs

He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die. — Proverbs 19:16

Like most people, as they get older, I have found myself going to the doctor a lot more in recent years. My story is no different than most. You start off doing the normal regular bloodwork, and then suddenly, one of the numbers appears off. Soon, you find yourself having conversations about your life and lifestyle with a doctor!

One of the things that really struck me was all the conversations about lifestyle. There were dozens of questions that they asked, as they do most people. Do you smoke? Do you drink? What kind of food do you eat? Do you exercise? If you do, how much and what type of exercise? Dozens of questions, and it felt almost like an interrogation about various aspects of my life as opposed to a doctor’s visit.

But the reason for all those questions is that how we live our lives affects our bodies. Everything we put in our bodies can affect our cholesterol, metabolism, and more. It affects how our organs work, our weight, and even our mental outlook. How we live our physical lives matters.

Even more than that, how we live our spiritual lives matters as well. In this verse, we are reminded that the person who keeps the commandment keeps his soul. Living our lives by the word of God, following it, and heeding its words will help us spiritually.

Just as much as we need to take care of our physical bodies, we must take care of our spiritual needs. We must take in a steady diet of God’s word and let it guide our hearts and minds through this life each day. It’s a way for us to guard and prepare our hearts for whatever we may face.

Across the world, Christians need the encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue its work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
