“The meek will inherit the Earth” – Jesus
Another rare solar annular eclipse has come and gone.
Many so-called Bible prophecy experts who made foolish predictions about the end of the Earth via apocalypse will go into self-imposed hiding until the next Blood Moon, solar eclipse, shooting star, or asteroid.
Christians unfamiliar with the ancient Hebrew and Greek languages predict the end of the Earth because they don’t understand the language of biblical prophets, including Jesus, our Savior. They say, “We believe the Bible!.” Sadly, they need to understand it better.
For example, Jesus told His followers shortly before His crucifixion:
“Immediately after the distress of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ Matthew 24:39
Jesus used Hebrew metaphorical language to describe the fall of Judah and the removal of its oppressive political and religious leaders, not the end of the Earth.
When biblical prophets used “the sun, the moon, stars, and heavenly bodies,” they referred to national leaders in positions of authority, not the literal sun, moon, stars, and heavenly bodies.
The literal sun and moon are not darkened, nor are the literal stars falling from the sky.
This language is about God judging cities, nations, and leaders for injustice and oppression.
Let me prove this to you from the Bible.
Joseph and the Sun, Moon, and Stars Bowing
Joseph, son of Israel, got in trouble for his dream about the sun, moon, and stars.
Most of you know the biblical story of Joseph in the book of Genesis. His father, Israel, gave him a beautiful coat of many colors, showing favoritism of Jospeh among his eleven other sons. The descendants of Israel’s twelve sons were the 12 Tribes (Families) of Israel, which eventually became the nation of Israel.
Joseph’s brothers were very jealous of Joseph.
That jealousy was not only because of Joseph’s coat but mainly due to a dream that Joseph had, which he relayed to his family:
Then Joseph dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, “Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” – Genesis 37:9
Of course, we know that the LITERAL sun, moon, and stars did not bow down to Joseph. Even his family did not come to such a crazy conclusion:
But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you?” –Genesis 37:10
In the ancient world, the sun, moon, and stars represented the rulers of families, cities, kingdoms, and nations.
The sun, moon, and stars are people who rule over others and the entities they lead.
In the Bible, the sun is the male authority (king), the moon is the female authority (queen), and the stars are the princes (leaders) of a family, city, kingdom, or nation.
God’s Judgment on Proud Leaders
Throughout the Bible, God judges the injustice and oppression of people by proud leaders of families, cities, kingdoms, and nations is given in terms of “the sun darkened” (the king humbled by God), “the moon not giving her light” (the queen humbled by God), and “the stars falling from the sky” (the religious, political, and civic leaders humbled by God).
For example:
Amos 8:9 describes God’s judgment on the northern kingdom of Israel, which collapsed in 722 BC: “It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord God, “that I will make the sun go down at noon And make the earth dark in broad daylight.”
Isaiah 13:10 describes God’s judgment on BABYLON – “The sun will be dark when it rises, and the moon will not shed its light.”
Ezekiel 32:8 God’s judgment on Egypt when it was conquered by Persia in 525 BC: “All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you.”
Ezekiel 26:3-4 describes God’s judgment on the ancient city of Tyre for her rebellion. “I am against thee, O Tyre, and will cause many nations to come up against thee, as the sea causeth his waves to come up. And they shall make her like the top of a rock.”
God judges proud people in families, cities, and nations and warns them with language of the sun being darkened, the moon losing its light, and the stars falling.
Jesus in Mark 13:34 and Matthew 24:29 speaks about judgment on Jerusalem and the nation of Israel, fulfilled by the Roman conquest in AD 70 and the scattering of the Jews: “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,” and “Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light.”
In modern Western Civilization, we don’t have kings and queens (except in England). We have Presidents, politicians, city councilmen, business leaders, and media moguls who run the country. They are the modern “sun, moon, and stars.”
The Wall Street Journal reported today on the collapse of downtown St. Louis. This once vibrant Midwest metropolis is in “a death spiral” (Wall Street Journal), typical of many other metropolitan cities being destroyed from within.
“Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the sun and the light, the moon and the stars are darkened” – Ecclesiastes 12:1-2

Rex and Judy, maybe we have helped people see that the most essential thing in life is to trust Jesus and live like Him, “full of grace and truth.” He promised His followers that “the meek (the humble) will inherit the earth,” but the proud will be destroyed.
Remember this biblical lesson on pride the next time Moon Fever strikes our nation. Better yet, join me in remembering “our Creator in the days of our youth and our old age.”
