Bunny Girl Senpai Characters: Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai First published in Japan under the title Seishun Buta Yar, Hajime Kamoshida and Kji Mizoguchi created the Senpai light novel series.
Life takes an unexpected turn for high school student Sakuta Azusagawa when he encounters young actress Mai Sakurajima, disguised as a bunny girl, alone in a library.
Mai finds it intriguing that other people can’t see her when she’s dressed ordinarily or tries to avoid celebrity life, but Sakuta can. Sakuta labels this occurrence “Adolescence Syndrome” and sets out to uncover its cause while becoming closer to Mai and encountering other girls with the same condition.
Now Let’s cover some of the characters of Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai.
Sakuta Azusagawa
Sakuta tries to keep a low profile until he meets Mai, who convinces him to look into Adolescence Syndrome. Three slashes to his chest were the result of him being impacted by his sister Kaede’s Adolescent Syndrome.
When Sakuta meets Mai and aids her in conquering her Adolescent Syndrome, his life is forever altered, and he eventually becomes engaged with other girls who suffer from the same illness.
Sakuta is a good guy who is always willing to lend a hand, but he also has a nasty side.
He has a tendency to be quite frank and forthright in his interactions with others, as well as to make crude jokes. Sakuta is generous and considerate, frequently putting the needs of others ahead of his own.
His willingness to put others before himself results from his sister Kaede’s case of Adolescent Syndrome and from his decision to change for the better following his first encounter with Shoko Makinohara. In Rascal Does Not Dream of a Lost Singer, he changes careers and enrolls in university.
Tomoe Koga
Tomoe, the main character of the second light novel, is a freshman at Sakuta’s high school. She is also the protagonist of the story. Tomoe accuses Sakuta of being a lolicon when she first sees him at a park when he is attempting to assist a small girl in locating her mother.
This encounter causes Tomoe to first meet Sakuta. She is extremely self-conscious, and as a result, so she asks Sakuta to play the role of her false boyfriend so that her other friends won’t gossip about her behind her back.
But, ridiculous charges are made about her, and as a result of seeing him defend her, she finally falls in love with him. Unfortuitously, Tomoe’s affection for Sakuta generates a loop in their connection that begins on the very final day of their time together.
Sakuta confronts Tomoe about her sentiments, and while she does confess them, in the end, he decides not to pursue the relationship. Despite this, they decide to remain friends.
Rio Futaba
Rio, the main character of the third light novel, is also the only student at Sakuta and Mai’s high school to be a part of the science club. She is also one of Sakuta’s only friends. She first had the misconception that Adolescent Syndrome was a myth before she ever experienced it herself.
A clone of hers arrives with a different personality, and she uses posting suggestive photographs of herself online as a form of self-punishment. This is all because she lacks confidence in her physical looks. When Sakuta assists the two Rios in accepting both who they are and the friendships they have developed, the two Rios recombine into a single individual.
Kaede Azusagawa
Kaede, the younger sister of Sakuta, is another sufferer of Adolescent Syndrome; after being bullied online and receiving death threats on her cellphone, she developed an extreme fear of strangers and strangely began to sustain injuries. It wasn’t until she gave up school and social media that she began to feel better. After that, she spends some time alone with her cat at Sakuta’s place.
She loves her brother so much that she often joins him in bed at night. Kaede is diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder later on. Kaede had lost all sense of herself and become someone else entirely. She remembers some things from before the past two years, but not much else.
Despite his disappointment in the disappearance of the sister he had come to know, Sakuta welcomes back his biological sibling and agrees to assist her in getting her previous life back. The fifth light book focuses on Kaede.
Shoko Makinohara
Sakuta’s first love was also named Shoko. She is a timid eighth grader who meets Sakuta by chance during a thunderstorm. She turns out to be the same Shoko Sakuta encountered during his incident, who left for recovery after receiving a new heart.
Shoko reappears to Sakuta when Kaede recovers her memories, assisting him in getting over the loss of the Kaede he had known for two years. Shoko leaves as Sakuta cools off, only to return and announce, to Mai’s dismay, that she plans to stay in Sakuta’s house for a while.
It is eventually revealed that there are actually two timelines in which Shoko exists; the older one is only possible due to the fact that on Christmas Day, Sakuta will be killed in a car accident and his heart will be donated to Shoko, allowing her to live. When Mai gives her life to protect Sakuta, Shoko assists him in going back in time to undo his error and rescue Mai.
She also fixes the problem that was causing her Adolescent Syndrome by going back to her elementary school timeline, but in doing so she alters history so that Sakuta and Mai never meet Shoko. As Sakuta runs into Shoko at the beach, he is reminded of all the good times he and Shoko had in the past and they make up.
Mai Sakurajima
Mai chooses to take a break, only to find that no one seems to notice her—except Sakuta, who promises to assist her figure out what’s going on as she draws closer to him. She was testing her theory that people would notice her if she dressed as a bunny girl and ran into Sakuta there.
Time causes more and more people to forget about Mai, until eventually only Sakuta himself remembers her. When Sakuta publicly confesses his love for Mai in front of the entire school, he brings Mai back to life and revives everyone’s memories of her. The two then make an effort to begin dating, which is complicated by Mai’s acting career.
Later on, Mai contracts Adolescent Syndrome from her half-sister Nodoka, forcing them to switch appearances. Sakuta’s assistance in bringing the sisters together again brings back normalcy. The first light book focuses on Mai. Mai has a calm demeanor, is polite, and is incredibly sweet to Kaede and others.
She is also quick to lend a helping hand and to dispel rumors about Sakuta’s poor image. Despite her caustic demeanor, she has a good heart and actually feels embarrassed by Sakuta’s sexual jokes. She shares Sakuta’s unselfish nature.
Final Thoughts
At first glance, this show seems like it may be classified as weeb trash. And that’s on purpose; the title and cover are blatant clickbait, which is how I found out about the series; yet, the episode itself is excellent. This show’s art and story are both expertly created to provide a profoundly moving viewing experience. The chemistry between Mai and Sakuta is incredible, and the two of them play off each other brilliantly, making for a truly delightful viewing experience.
We learn a lot about the other characters and the issues they’re facing, too, and see how those issues translate into new skills and transformations for those individuals and their environments.
