By Faith In Christ

Hebrews 12:1-4 calls us to imagine our lives of faith as a race set before us, surrounded by a “great cloud of witnesses” — those who have gone before us, bearing testimony to God’s faithfulness. This image is both inspiring and challenging. It reminds us that we’re not running alone; we have the encouragement of believers throughout history who endured trials and overcame by faith. Their lives witness the power of God’s grace, urging us onward.

The writer encourages us to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.” Often, it’s not only obvious sins that trip us up, but subtle distractions and burdens we carry that hold us back. Letting go of these hindrances frees us to “run with perseverance,” a key theme here. The journey of faith isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon, requiring steady, faithful endurance.

Verse 2 centers us: “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Jesus ran this race first, showing us the way. He endured the cross and all its shame, looking forward to the joy beyond. This joy — being reunited with the Father and redeeming us — was the prize that motivated Him. His example is a reminder that, even in hardship, God’s purpose and joy are set before us.

When we feel weary or discouraged, we’re called to “consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Jesus’ perseverance becomes our strength. As we fix our eyes on Him, we are encouraged to press on, reminded that we’re part of a larger story of faith and endurance that God has been writing since the beginning of time.
