BIBLE TEXT: Matthew 18:22-35 (KJV)

22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.

24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.

25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.

28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.

29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.

31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.

32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:

33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?

34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.

35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Forgiveness means different things to different people, but word forgiveness means intentional decision to let go of resentment and anger. The bible teaches that unselfish love is the basis for true forgiveness since it keeps no record of wrongs. 1 Corinthians 13:5. Forgiving others means letting go of resentment and giving up any claim to be compensated for the hurt or loss we have suffered.

LESSON AIM: To make members know that believers are mandated to forgive others for any wrong doings.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should be able to;

  • What this principle 4.9.0 is
  • Know the benefits of forgiveness

TEXT REVIEW: Matthew 18:22-35

  • There is account for everything will do on earth.
  • Every believer must have heart to condone others, permit others.

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: WHAT IS THE PRINCIPLE?

The 4.9.0 principle is referring to the principle of forgiveness that our Lord Jesus Christ established in the passage we read today. When we forgive those that offended us seventy times seven times a day, then we would have actually forgiven for four hundred and ninety times a day. The question we need to ask ourselves is, is it possible for us to be offended 490 times in a day? This is simply admonishing us to forgive, times without number. The Lord expects us to forgive one another as He has forgiven us. Romans 3:23 teaches that all have sinned and lack the glory of God. We need forgiveness because we have sinned against God, ourselves and others. The one who has received forgiveness, has to give forgiveness as well. We must not be like that servant in today’s bible passage, who his master forgave, but he was not willing to forgive others his fellow servant.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO: WHY DO PEOPLE FIND IT DIFFICULT TO FORGIVE?

  1. Lack of knowledge of God on forgiveness. Matthew 6:12-15
  2. Shameful experience brings up old hurting that can seems shameful for one selves.
  3. Betrayal of trust.
  4. Emotional wound
  5. Feeling of resentment.

SUMMARY: Believers are mandated to forgive others for ALL wrong doings.

CONCLUSION: When you can think of people without thinking of the hurt they caused and stopped looking for them to fail, you have really forgiven them.
