Does Breeze Airways Have WiFi?

Summary

  • Breeze Airways’ Embraer 195 and 190 planes lack WiFi and will be phased out as Airbus A220s enter service by 2024.
  • Breeze partners with Viasat for high-speed satellite WiFi, offering fast and consistent streaming to all connected devices.
  • To access Breeze’s WiFi, passengers can connect for free with a Nicer bundle or pay $8 in regular economy for multiple devices.

The simple answer to this question is yes and no, depending on your flight. Even before Breeze began commercial service, the airline bragged that it would have fast WiFi onboard. After placing an order to purchase 60 Bombardier CS300s, now rebranded as Airbus A220, Breeze subleased some second-hand Embraer 195 aircraft from Brazilian airline Azul and some Embraer 190s that are operated on lease by Air Canada to accelerate its launch.

The new Breezy Rewards loyalty program offers a guaranteed redemption value and launches alongside a cobranded credit card and five new destinations.

When Breeze took to the air for the first time on May 27, 2021, none of its Embraer 195 or 190 aircraft had WiFi and still don’t. The plan was to phase out the Brazillian-built planes by 2024 and use them solely for charter flights as the Airbus A220s entered service. As the Airbus A220s arrived, Breeze was still slow to add WiFi but suddenly got more serious about doing so in 2023, saying its entire Airbus A220 fleet would have WiFi by May 2024.

Breeze uses Viasat for its WiFi

Breeze partnered with Viasat, a high-speed satellite broadband service provider, for its inflight WiFi service. Viasat’s high-capacity Ka-band satellite network powers the WiFi and will allow Breeze passengers to enjoy fast streaming content at any stage of the flight. Regardless of how many passengers and crew are connected to the WiFi, the Viasat network is designed to deliver consistent high speed to each connected device.

When speaking about partnering with Viasat in a Viasat statement on March 7, 2022, Breeze founder and CEO David Neeleman said:

“Our vision for in-flight connectivity extends way beyond just delivering high-quality streaming and internet speeds. It will enable us to offer a fully integrated and seamless experience through the Breeze app, giving our Guests unparalleled access to a wide array of personalized services and options. We identified a natural partner in Viasat — not only in the performance, speed, and satellite capacity advantage but as a great cultural partner in the way we both seek to prioritize the digital experience.”

When also speaking about the partnership, Viasat vice president and general manager of Commercial Aviation, Don Buchman, added:

“From our first discussions with Breeze, there was a great fit based on how the airline values the digital experience for its Guests and how our world-class IFC solution delivers on that promise. Specifically, for their expanding network and transcontinental routes, we can deliver the industry’s fastest in-flight connectivity service—even for bandwidth-intensive applications like streaming video, which dominate internet traffic today.”

About Breeze Airways

In 2017, Brazilian-American businessman David Neeleman noticed that all 11 major airlines in the United States were making a profit. He also noted that 80% of all passengers in the USA were carried by the nation’s four largest airlines. Between 2007 and 2017, the American economy had grown by 34%, yet airline capacity was stagnant.

After co-founding Morris Air, WestJet, JetBlue, and Azul Linhas Aereas, Needleman was no stranger to the airline business. Copying European low-cost airlines, Needleman planned to offer point-to-point flights from small secondary airports, avoiding busy hubs.

The new airline, which was initially going to be called “Moxy,” would offer comfortable, spacious seats and free WiFi, just like JetBlue did. The way it would make money was to charge for advanced seat booking and for onboard snacks and drinks, similar to ultra-low cost carriers Spirit Airlines and Allegiant Air.

Realizing that Moxy might be confused with Marriott’s Moxy Hotels, the name was changed to Breeze Airways on February 7, 2020. Thirteen days later, on February 20, 2020, Breeze Airways established its headquarters in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, 14.7 miles from Salt Lake City Airport (SLC).

  • Charleston International Airport (CHS) in South Carolina

  • Orlando International Airport (MCO) in Florida
  • Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport in Providence, Rhode Island
