Tony Fretton Architects shuts its doors

The well-known studio, whose Fuglsang Kunstmuseum in Denmark was shortlisted for the 2009 Stirling Prize, officially appointed a liquidator on Wednesday (3 April). The total that the company owed is not yet known.

It is understood practice founder Tony Fretton, 79, will continue working with David Owen, 20 years as an architect at his now-closed Fitzrovia-based practice and now has his own practice.

It is believed several jobs will be carried across to David Owen Architects, including the second stage of the refurbishment of the Camden Arts Centre. The first phase, a major overhaul of its 1897 home, was completed in 2004.

Fretton, an emeritus professor at the Faculty of Architecture TU Delft, will continue to teach at other universities.

Tony Fretton Architects worked around Europe and across several sectors, including high-profile arts and culture projects and many well-regarded housing schemes.

Its standout residential developments included the Vassall Road for Crispin Kelly’s Baylight in Lambeth (2008), the €4.5 million Molenplein terrace houses in Den Helder on the North Sea coast of Holland (2013), and its Westkaai residential towers in Antwerp (2016).

The practice also worked on homes for the likes of Anish Kapoor.

As well as the Deinze Town Hall and Administrative Centre, Belgium (2016) the practice also famously completed the New British Embassy & Residence in Warsaw, Poland in 2009.

Landmark cultural projects included the Quay Arts space on the Isle of Wight (1997), the Lisson Gallery in Bell Street, London (1992) and the Longside Gallery at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2003).

Tony Fretton and liquidators Carter Clark have been contacted for comment.

The news comes just weeks after London-based architect Sarah Wigglesworth decided to wind down her award-winning practice, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects, after 30 years.
