Edinburgh, Scotland – The Fingal, a luxury floating hotel permanently berthed in the Port of Leith, has been named one of the world’s best hotels in the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards 2024.
The five-star hotel has taken the top spot in the UK and second place in Europe in the Small and Boutique hotels category, solidifying its position as a world-class destination.
The Travelers’ Choice Awards “Best of the Best” title is awarded to fewer than 1% of the 8 million listings on Tripadvisor, recognizing the highest level of excellence in travel based on reviews and opinions from the platform’s community over a 12-month period.
Opened in 2019, the Fingal is a former Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) tender that has been transformed into a luxury hotel by the award-winning team at The Royal Yacht Britannia.
The hotel boasts an air of old-world Art Deco luxury ocean liner elegance, combined with the glamour and style of a superyacht.
Franck Bruyère, Director of Hospitality, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, “We’re committed to offering a world-class visitor experience to all our UK and international guests, so it’s a great honour to have been recognised by them as one of the world’s best hotels and the UK’s ‘Best of the Best’ in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards 2024.”
The Fingal’s success is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of its entire crew, who work tirelessly to ensure everything is shipshape onboard Scotland’s only five-star luxury floating hotel.
The hotel has also been named AA Hotel of the Year Scotland 2023-24 by the internationally recognized Automobile Association (AA).
Dan Mitchell, Vice President & General Manager Hotels at TripAdvisor, praised the Best of the Best Hotels, saying, “Our Best of the Best Hotels are marvels, acclaimed by thousands of travellers for their remarkable service, stunning design, and wealth of amenities that redefine what it means to have an exceptional hotel experience.”
The Fingal’s Lighthouse Restaurant & Bar is open to non-residents for afternoon tea, dinner, and cocktails, offering a choice of self-contained private dining booths for small pre-booked groups.
The ship’s 22 luxury cabins are each named after Stevenson lighthouses, inspired by Fingal’s rich maritime heritage.
The hotel’s double-height ballroom and bridge provide dedicated dining spaces for private events, corporate celebrations, and weddings.
Located opposite the Port of Leith tram stop, the Fingal offers a direct and quick transport link between Leith and Edinburgh city centre.
The £5m investment by The Royal Yacht Britannia has transformed this classically designed ship, which was launched in 1962 as the last ship built by the Blythswood Ship Building Company in Glasgow.
The Fingal spent most of her service life working out of Oban for 30 years, followed by her last six working years based in Stromness, Orkney, before being sold to a private owner who lovingly maintained the ship for 14 years prior to Britannia’s purchase in August 2014.
Tim, from the Youtube channel Walk With Me Tim, stayed at the hotel and provided a full review of the hotel and the inside of the ship.
