The average price for a gallon of regular gas has increased slightly on Tuesday, November 5, Election Day. It is a minimal increase, but an increase nonetheless, as the new price for a gallon of regular in the country stood at $3.102, a slight drop from Monday’s price of $3.101.
Overall, the average gas price has been consistently dropping in recent months. Despite Tuesday’s increase, recent national price averages have followed this trend as Tuesday’s price is less expensive than a week ago, when the average price for regular gas was $3.134 per gallon. The same holds for a month ago when regular gas was more expensive than today, coming in at $3.177 per gallon.

Heading into today’s presidential election, gas prices have been an important topic for many in the country. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, has promised to address the country’s gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances. And while gas prices have significantly decreased in the last few months, they still remain higher today than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Maryland
Unlike the national average, gas prices in Maryland dropped on Tuesday to $3.057 per gallon, a slight decrease from Monday’s price of $3.06 per gallon. Tuesday’s price was less expensive than a week ago, when residents in the state paid $3.131 for a gallon of regular gas. A month ago, gas in Maryland was also more expensive at $3.233 per gallon.
Delaware
Gas prices in Delaware continue to fall as the average price for a gallon of regular gas on Tuesday stands at $2.959. This was a slight drop from Monday when gas was $2.966. Tuesday’s price is cheaper than gas in the First State a week ago, when residents paid $3.045 per gallon. The same holds true for a month ago, when gas was much more expensive, at $3.182.
Virginia
The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Virginia on Tuesday is $3.004, a slight decrease from Monday’s price of $3.005. Tuesday’s price is also less expensive than a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas was $3.052. A month ago in Virginia, a gallon of regular gas was $3.039, slightly less expensive than last week’s price but still more expensive than what gas cost on Tuesday.

Oklahoma
On Election Day 2024, Oklahoma is officially the state with the lowest gas prices in the nation, overtaking Texas and Mississippi as the two states who held that distinction in recent days and weeks. While Mississippi was the state with the least expensive gas prices for most of 2024, Texas took over that honor last week. On Tuesday, Oklahoma beat out Texas for the least expensive gas with a price of $2.635 per gallon. In second place, is Mississippi with a price of $2.66 per gallon, followed by Texas, with a price of $2.667.
Hawaii
On the flip side, Hawaii remains the state with the most expensive gas prices in the nation. For most of the year, California has been the state with the highest gas prices, but Hawaii has overtaken the Golden State for that distinction recently. On Tuesday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the Aloha State is $4.575. This is slightly more than California’s price of $4.537 per gallon for regular gas.
