Fang Island, the cult-favorite math-rock band from Providence, Rhode Island, have announced a box set reissuing their entire catalog. Doesn’t Exist II: The Complete Recordings comes out on December 13 via Joyful Noise. The band has also shared a new music video for “Starquake,” a song that originally appeared on a limited-edition flexi-disc in 2014, directed by guitarist Chris Georges. Watch the clip below.
Written in 2006 but recorded nearly a decade later, in 2014, at Brooklyn’s Silent Barn, “Starquake” serves as a bookend to Fang Island’s career. “Despite its foreboding introduction, the track settles into a positive if frantic loop, orbiting a bolstering and reliable core,” says singer-guitarist Jason Bartell. “With each rotation another hooky adornment is affixed, elongating and warping the orbit until it can no longer maintain its shape, hurtling into the deep black unknown of space, only to find a harmonious new resting place.”
Doesn’t Exist II: The Complete Recordings includes Fang Island’s two full-length albums, Fang Island and Major, as well as a 12″ record featuring 2007’s Day of the Great Leap EP, 2008’s Sky Gardens EP, and demos of their debut EP Doesn’t Exist. The box set also has an exclusive 7″ with “Starquake” and the Andrew W.K.–starring “Patterns on the Wall.” It’s all housed in a hand-crafted wooden box. Check it out below.
