Celebrity architect reveals first look at his Brisbane dream home

Renowned architect Shaun Lockyer has revealed images of the home he has designed for himself and wife, Julie, in Brisbane’s most expensive suburb.

The tropical hideaway in Teneriffe, called The Lockyer House, features a mix of dark and light timbers, louvres, natural stone, cascading sky gardens, and timber screens, surrounded by lush greenery.

Construction is already underway on the new home, with the existing property being completely demolished by M2 Construct, who is doing the build.

“Having designed and built over 250 houses over the last 35 years, it’s now my turn to do this for my family,” Mr Lockyer said.

“Our house, a new build on a small, but very special block in Teneriffe, tells the story of how we wish to live in the inner city, intended as our forever, down-sizer home.”

The property occupies just over 300 sqm and sits on a small, 262 sqm block, but has been designed to prioritise its connection to the landscape, view, and light, Mr Lockyer said.

“With only one neighbour, an easement off a cul-de-sac, and borrowed space via a council park in front, the house is already very private, contains five, elevated concrete planters, and two landscaped courtyards, creating an open, light and completely private living condition,” he said.

“The architecture, a distillation of a lifetime of thoughts, ideas, and values, is unapologetically ‘modern’, channelling the likes of Le Corbusier, Mies, and Alto, even down to a concrete cast in ‘modular man in the external wall’.”

The home features enduring and tactile materials, and no paint or plasterboard, instead only concrete, stone, timber, and stained black ply.

“It’s been a long time in the making,” Mr Lockyer said. “It’s a dream to do this for us, and we are very excited about the road ahead.”

Records show Mr Lockyer and his wife paid $2.5m in 2022 for the original property.

Mr Lockyer is often called on by celebrities to design their homes, with the latest being Formula One champion, Mark Webber.

Mr Webber bought a property in Noosa Heads in 2011 for $4.9m from former tennis player, Thomas Muster.

Mr Lockyer declined to comment, but it is understood he has been working with the racing car driver and his partner, Ann, for the past three years.

He recently took to Instagram to share a picture of the two of them.
