Senegalese American singer Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam known as Akon showered praises on Ghanaian sensation Black sherif. During an interview with BBC 1 xtra he called Blacko the “voice of the African youth”.

During the interview he responded to the question on which African artist does he think is a symbolism of the African continent. He narrated how he stumbled upon Black Sherif’s music.

He said “I am a huge fan of Blavk sherif right now. I think he reminds me of the energy of myself when I came out. I remember that first record. I was in New York City when a friend of mine named Bako from Mali played me the song, I said ‘yo who the F is that?’ Like you can hear in his voice. You can feel the pain, you can feel the struggle, you hear the challenges but you can just hear a ghetto kid just wanting to get out. It’s the way he says it. You know it’s real and it’s not fabricated”.

He expressed how he could discern the struggle and pain in Blacko’s lyrics, highlighting Black Sherif’s authenticity and the importance for major labels to monitor him closely. Additionally, he expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Black Sherif.

He said, “You feel that especially if you have been that. I was like ‘wow this kid is going to be something and if no major picks him up; they need to get to him before I do’. That boy right there is a monster. He is the voice of the youth in Africa”.

Akon is an influential music figure who rose to prominence in 2004 following the release of his debut single Locked Up (featuring Styles P).
