Eddie Murphy is officially on board to play the eccentric funk legend George Clinton in an upcoming biopic from filmmaker Bill Condon.
Virgil Williams (Mudbound, The Piano Lesson) is writing the film’s script, which is based on Clinton’s own memoir, Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You? The biopic will track the musician from his roots in 1940s-era North Carolina to becoming the bonafide Godfather of Funk and leader of Parliament and Funkadelic
Murphy previously worked with Condon on Dreamgirls, the 2006 musical drama inspired by Motown Records and the Supremes. That project earned Murphy an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
According to Deadline, Murphy is producing the Clinton biopic through his own Eddie Murphy Productions, with the 83-year-old Clinton serving as an executive producer. Amazon MGM will distribute the film.
Murphy will next reprise his role as Donkey in Shrek 5, which is set for release on July 1st, 2026.
