Madame Web continues to be entangled in negative press long after its disastrous box-office run ended. A new report confirms star Sydney Sweeney agreed to do the movie to ensure Sony Pictures greenlit her hit romantic comedy with Glen Powell, Anyone but You.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sweeney signed up for a supporting role in the Sony Spider-Man Universe’s Madame Web as a bargaining chip to help Anyone but You come to fruition. According to one Sony source, “She wanted them to know she was a team player.” Anyone but You eventually premiered last December, just under two months before Madame Web made its theatrical bow, becoming a box office smash ($220 million worldwide against a $25 million budget) despite mixed reviews. After this film’s success, Sweeney quickly became one of the highest-paid actors “of her generation” with the money she’s now earning for her roles.

Isabela Merced reflected working on Madame Web amid its poor reception.
Madame Web was a career low for Sweeney, with the maligned film setting multiple unfortunate records, becoming the SSU’s lowest-rated effort critically (11% on Rotten Tomatoes) and worst-grossing movie ($100.5 million worldwide), barely making back its budget. However, Sweeney still came out of Madame Web with a respectable payday, notching $750,000 for her work. Meanwhile, her Anyone but You pay was reportedly $2 million.
The new report backs up what Sweeney said several months back, claiming her involvement in Madame Web was a “strategic business decision” that allowed her to build relationships with Sony executives, ensuring Anyone but You got made. Though Madame Web struggled, bar a mini-Renaissance on streaming after moving to Netflix, Sweeney insisted she’s glad she made the S.J. Clarkson-helmed flick, claiming she has no regrets and is “thankful” for the opportunity. Sweeney portrays Julia Cornwall in Madame Web, which stars Dakota Johnson as the eponymous medic-turned-hero, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Adam Scott, Emma Roberts, and Mike Epps.
