Martin Scorsese’s 34-Year-Old Gangster Masterpiece Lands a New Streaming Home

A film that raised the bar for mobster crime films and one that some consider to be Martin Scorsese’s finest movie will be available for streaming soon. Goodfellas, released in 1990, and starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci, will stream on Paramount+ starting November 1, 2024. The movie is based on Nicholas Pileggi’s nonfiction book Wiseguy.

Written by Scorsese and Pileggi, Goodfellas is the story of the rise and eventually downfall of mobster Henry Hill (Liotta) and his associates from 1955 to 1980. Pesci’s performance as Tommy DeVito scored him a Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar at the 1991 Academy Awards. Lorainne Bracco (The Sopranos) was nominated for her portrayal of Karen Hill.

Goodfellas was nominated for Best Picture at the 1991 Oscars, and Scorsese was nominated for Best Director. Scorsese and Pileggi were also nominated for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium, and the film was nominated for Best Film Editing.

Arguably no director has had a greater impact on the gangster genre than Martin Scorsese.

The Film Had an Especially Iconic Line

Arguably one of the best crime movies ever made, the cast of the film had a lot to do with it. Liotta’s role as Henry Hill will live on forever, even though the actor died in 2022 at the age of 67. De Niro’s performance as James “Jimmy” Conway landed Goodfellas a spot on CBR’s recent list of Robert De Niro’s 10 Best Crime & Gangster Movies.

Pesci’s award-winning turn as Tommy DeVito had notably one of the most iconic lines in cinema with his “I’m funny how?” line. The scene starts with Tommy telling a funny story to a group of his associates and Henry tell’s Tommy he’s funny, and all of a sudden, Tommy’s mood changes as if he’s been insulted, leading to the classic line.

A New De Niro Mafia Movie is Coming Next Year

Mafia movie fans will get to see De Niro in a new mob film soon. In Alto Knights, De Niro will bring two mobsters to life, playing dual roles of Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, who were real-life rival mobsters in the 1950s. Alto Knights is directed by Levinson and written by Goodfellas’ Pileggi.

The film will also stars Debra Messing (Will and Grace), Katherine Narducci (The Sopranos), and Sh õ gun’s breakout star Cosmo Jarvis.

Production on the movie is said to have wrapped in 2023, but the film won’t be released until Spring of 2025. The reason for the delay is the movie, originally titled Wise Guys, was set for a February 2024 release, but it was pushed back after the studio started to lose faith in the original iteration and that reactions to the movie were mixed. IMDb states Alto Knights is expected to be released on March 21, 2025.

Goodfellas boasts a Certified Fresh 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. It will stream on Paramount+ starting November 1, 2024.
