Before Elizabeth Olsen became the MCU‘s Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, she was known for her work in indie films. However, the actor says being involved with the superhero franchise is about more than the paycheck.
Speaking to Vulture, Olsen explained that she doesn’t see her MCU role as a forced trade-off that enables her to focus on smaller passion projects. It’s more of a choice. “I’d never really had the mentality of ‘one for them, one for me,'” she said. “Marvel has been such a consistent thing I’ve been able to return to and has created – what’s the word – some feeling of insurance in my life that has given me freedom to choose other jobs. So I haven’t felt like, ‘and then I’ll do this to do this.'”

“[Returning] has always felt like a choice,” Olsen continued. The actor went on to explain that each of her MCU appearances has come from a deeply creative place. “Every time, it’s character-driven. It’s always like, ‘We have this idea, and that’s why we want you to come back.’ It’s not like, ‘Just throw her in something.’” The actor is also aware that massive studio films help theaters “pay the rent” which enables them to showcase smaller films. “I do think that’s the relationship,” Olsen added.
Olsen Wanda Maximoff made her MCU debut in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Although her Wanda Maximoff character originally had a villainous streak, she eventually teams up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Wanda is left distraught after the events of Avengers: Endgame and creates a fake life for herself in WandaVision. When her happy ruse is destroyed, the character fully embraces her identity as the Scarlet Witch and is seemingly killed in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Olsen Hints At Another MCU Return
The actor recently hinted at a comeback during a recent convention Q&A. When asked if she has a future storyline she’d like to adapt for Wanda in the MCU, Olsen said, “Well, honestly, if I were to tell you exactly what I would want, I think I would maybe be spoiling something.” She also offered some insight into how Marvel approaches a character’s return. “Kevin Feige genuinely asks us what we want to do with the character, and then he does it. So I don’t know if I can share. I just want to come back.”
