Everything We Know About Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey

Fans of Guy Ritchie’s unique brand of high-octane action filmmaking have plenty of reason to be excited. The director’s next project is already on its way following the release of his most recent film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which debuted just a few months ago. Announced back at CinemaCon in early 2024, Ritchie’s next film is officially titled In the Grey.

What’s even more exciting than discovering that the next Guy Ritchie movie is already on its way is when you hear just how loaded the cast already is. In the Grey will reunite Ritchie with two of his most recent stars, Jake Gyllenhaal, who recently appeared in Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, and Henry Cavill, who was one of the primary players in Ungentlemanly Warfare. And that’s just a start. Not only has the cast of this upcoming thriller been rounded out with equally famous superstars, but it’s also well on its way and only a few months from release.

While Netflix’s The Gentlemen and Guy Ritchie’s 2019 film share the same name and a thematic connection, there are still quite a few differences.

What Is In the Grey About?

Sometimes, to Steal from Criminals, You Need to Bring In Criminals

To this point, the only thing anyone knows about Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey is what they were able to infer from a brief sizzle reel and even shorter logline that debuted at CinemaCon 2024 in Las Vegas in early 2024. According to the project’s brief disclaimer, the film’s story involves two extraction specialists (Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill) who must aid in the escape attempt of a female hostage negotiator played by Eiza González.

During their appearance at CinemaCon, director Guy Ritchie and star Henry Cavill described these extraction specialists as men who operate between criminality and the law, which, to be honest, sounds very much on brand considering Ritchie’s obsession with the criminal element.

The 4th Expendables film was a massive flop, but that doesn’t mean that one of Jason Statham’s best collaborators can’t help turn the series around.

According to reports from that same CinemaCon event, the footage shown to everyone in attendance involves Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González’s characters staking out a café while Heny Cavill provides them with instructions through an earpiece. Based on dialogue heard throughout the scene, this trio of lead characters is looking to take back money that was stolen from rich criminals by a villain named Salazar. That suggests that Eiza González’s character has probably been brought in for her bargaining abilities, while Gyllenhaal and Cavill are there to make sure everyone escapes with their lives.

Of course, it doesn’t take long for all hell to break loose as a shootout erupts, and the duo must make their escape under a hail of bullets. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, then how about this — at the end of the sizzle reel, Gyllenhaal takes out a helicopter with a handy-dandy rocket launcher, suggesting the stakes of this film will be as high as they are exciting.

Who Is Making In the Grey?

Guy Ritchie’s Career Renaissance Continues Moving Forward

Director Guy Ritchie behind a camera

Somewhat surprisingly, director Guy Ritchie has recently found himself in something of a career renaissance. Four of his last five movies have all earned fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with only Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre coming in at a percentage that fell below 68%.

Even more impressively, those five films all came immediately after his remake of Aladdin generated a colossal $1.05 billion at the worldwide box office. That gigantic sum isn’t just the most that Guy Ritchie has ever made for one of his movies; it’s enough to make Aladdin the 44th highest-grossing movie of all time (as of this writing). Now look, there’s next to no chance that In the Grey ever tops that number, but that doesn’t mean the film won’t be a notable success, and considering the film’s pedigree, it might become even more than that.

Guy Ritchie doubling down by casting Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill as the leads of In the Grey suggests that Ritchie is well aware of his recent string of successes and that he’s now looking to reach for the stars and hopefully generate one larger, gigantic hit. Certainly, Gyllenhaal and Cavill have both proven that they can pull in box office returns all by themselves, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens when their star power combines with Eiza González’s rising notoriety.

Which Stars Are a Part of In the Grey?

Guy Ritchie Is Compiling an All-Star Cast

In the Grey will see Guy Ritchie reunite with Jake Gyllenhaal after directing him in a harrowing performance as a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier looking to save the life of an Afghanistan interpreter in Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant. It will also see the filmmaker reunite with Henry Cavill, who has led two of Ritchie’s former films in The Man From U.N.C.L.E and, more recently, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Last but certainly not least, Eiza González will also team up with Ritchie once again, having also starred in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

All three superstars are looking forward to this upcoming film’s release and were ecstatic at the opportunity to work with Guy Ritchie once again. In fact, when asked by MovieWeb to discuss his working relationship with Ritchie, Henry Cavill described it in the following way,

“It felt comfortable. Guy is really good at creating an environment where creativity feels safe. He’s a really good leader on set. He gives everyone their room to shine as well. And without sounding corny, because people always say this, they say it feels like family. It really does, because he’s been working with a lot of those guys since his earliest movies on the crew.”

That feeling of family is probably a big reason that these stars have all decided to return, and it’s also why In the Grey has been lucky enough to cast Rosamund Pike, hot off her incredible performance in the Academy Award-nominated film Saltburn. Details on her character are slim to none, but this will be the second time that Pike has worked beside Eiza González after teaming up for 2023’s I Care a Lot.

When Will In the Grey Be Released?

The Action Will Light a Fire Under You in Winter 2025

Somewhat surprisingly, In the Grey will hit theaters relatively soon. As reported by Deadline, despite the SAG-AFTRA strikes that decimated Hollywood’s release schedule in late 2023, the project was one of the few granted an interim agreement allowing the actors to work on the film during the strikes. That means filming began in September 2023 in the Canary Islands, and by the end of October, the shoot was already a wrap.

Guy Ritchie Wanted an Aladdin Sequel But Got a Much Better Disney Project Instead

Although Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin sequel never came to fruition, the accomplished director is now set to helm an even better project for Disney.

The production’s ability to work through the stoppage allowed Guy Ritchie and his crew enough time to put together the film’s sizzle reel, which debuted in Spring 2024 at CinemaCon and gave us all the only taste of the movie so far. Better yet, it’s also all but guaranteed that In the Grey will make its release date of January 17, 2025. Will Guy Ritchie have yet another hit on his hands this winter? Time will only tell, but there’s no denying that In the Grey is quickly shaping up to be one of the filmmaker’s most exciting releases in years.
