Hideaki Anno to direct Kamen Rider movie – CoolJapan Otaku

Hideaki Anno, who recently concluded his work on the final Evangelion movie, has been revealed to be the writer and director for a full-length Kamen Rider feature, titled Shin Kamen Rider.

The announcement was made on 3 April 2021 at 1930 hours (JST), the exact date and time of the TV premiere of the first Kamen Rider TV series in 1971. The movie is scheduled to be released in March 2023. Information of the cast and story will be made known in due course. In addition to the teaser visual and logo reveal, a 50th anniversary memorial video put together by Anno played at the beginning of the press conference.

Anno’s message reads, “This is a work that will fulfill an adult’s dream since childhood, a work that will stay in the hearts of children even after they grow up, a work that will transpose to the present day the epoch-making world created by Shotaro Ishinomori and Toei Ikuta Studio, and an entertaining work that can be enjoyed by those who do not know the original image. I will aim for this and will do my best.”

The 60-year-old’s last live-action movie is Shin Godzilla in 2016 and his next directorial feature is Shin Ultraman (initially set for summer 2021 but has since been delayed due to the pandemic).

Shin Kamen Rider capped off the day of announcements, which included Futo Detectives (Kamen Rider W sequel anime adaptation) and Kamen Rider Black Sun (Kamen Rider Black reboot).
