What are you up to this weekend? After a stormy week I hope to get outside and enjoy some sunshine. As far as indoor activities go, I need to plan my TBR for an upcoming trip to the beach! If you have ideas I’d love to hear. I’m also looking forward to my teens’ dance recital: watching them and their talented peers kill it on stage is so much fun.
I hope you have something to look forward to this weekend, and that this collection of interesting reads and favorite things helps ease you into that weekend frame of mind.
My favorite finds from around the web:
Why You Should Meet Your Literary Heroes. (The Book Tide) “Don’t do it, they say. You’ll only be disappointed, they say. I am happy to report that “they” are wrong.”
The books that shaped me: Shannan edition. (MMD) We kicked off a new series this week!
I’m a longtime fan of American Giant slub tees; this spring Will got in on the action with their men’s premium slub crew tees. We both wear mediums. The code DARCY still works for 20% off your first order. (I wish American Giant had rolled out their new ringer tee in time for our 2024 MMD Summer Reading Guide photo shoots—it would have been the perfect apparel for our summer camp-themed Guide!)
Practical advice for cooking as caregiving. (Keep Calm & Cook On) Great tips.
An Extraordinary Intergenerational Friendship. (Culture Study) I loved this interview with Sara B. Franklin, author of 2024 Summer Reading Guide selection The Editor: How Publishing Legend Judith Jones Shaped Culture in America (Bookshop).
The One Place in Airports People Actually Want to Be. (Atlantic gift link) “You could dismiss the amenities arms race as an absurd exercise in flattering wealth’s vanity—it is. But that flattery is so effective because lounges offer a solution to a real set of problems.”
Inspired by a recent trip to Spain, my 16-year-old and her friend made a fabulous Spanish tortilla for dinner last night. So good! (The Mediterranean Dish)
Should I Feel Guilty For Checking Out A Book Instead Of Buying It? (Huffington Post) Short answer: nope!
I’m not afraid of a 50-hour audiobook. (What Should I Read Next) I fill up the To Be Read queue of an avid Georgia gardener and horticulturalist with superb listens that lean literary (and are often in translation). Bonus: Stephanie answered my burning question about European trees.
To celebrate their 10th anniversary, Libro.fm has a month-long Buy One, Get One sale! Such a good audiobook deal.
Costco to stop selling books in surprise blow to publishers: report. (New York Post) “The decision is a blow to the publishing industry given that Costco buys books in bulk — ordering tens of thousands of copies of a book at a minimum — and offers them for sale to shoppers who may not otherwise seek them out.”
9 of the Most Walkable Cities in America. (Apartment Therapy) Mostly the usual suspects, but a few of these surprised me.
This adorable Target straw handbag screams summer. (I have a designer version of this exact style—a gift from a generous friend—and am using it all the time right now. But the price on THIS one is much easier on the wallet.)
Standout audiobooks for summer listening. (MMD) New and recent audiobook releases for your summer listening enjoyment.
What’s a Teenage Summer For? (Slate) “‘How many more years are you going to not have this much fun? As adults, we spend so much time trying to recapture that lightness and joy that we have at camp.’”
Don’t miss these posts:
