Pineapple Ham Steaks | Valerie’s Kitchen


These Pineapple Ham steaks are seared, topped with a slice of pineapple and an easy glaze, and finished in the oven. This easy ham steak recipe is on the table in under 30 minutes!

This small batch recipe is a delicious way to enjoy ham when serving less people for the holidays or any time of year.

It’s a natural thing to want to include ham on your Easter or Christmas menu. But, if you’re feeding four or less, a big ham is probably more than you need.

When I’m expecting my usual crowd here, I rotate between my Maple Glazed Spiral Ham, Slow Cooker Ham, and Classic Glazed Ham with Pineapple Sauce. But, if it were just my husband and I with a stray person or two in attendance, I wouldn’t hestiate to turn to this easy recipe.

Ingredient Notes

  • Ham steaks: I like boneless ham steaks best for this recipe. They come in vacuum sealed packages in the meat department which is exceptionally convenient. I recently discovered that Costco carries Smithfield Boneless Ham Steaks for a great price. They come packaged individually so you can just toss what you don’t need in the freezer for an easy future meal.
  • Pineapple: A small can of pineapple slices in 100% pineapple juice. One can has 4 slices which is precisely how many you need for this recipe. It’s important to use the pineapple in juice, not heavy syrup, since the juice is used to make the glaze.
  • Glaze ingredients: A little butter, the juice from the can of pineapple, light brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and a pinch of allspice. Allspice is made up of ground allspice berries which have a cozy, warm flavor similar to cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Pro Tip

Reserve all of the pineapple juice from the can of pineapple rings. Some will be used to make the glaze and you may need more to thin the glaze if it thickens up too much.

How to Make Pineapple Ham Steaks

  • Sear the ham steaks: Slice each ham steak in half and cook them briefly them in melted butter, until lightly browned. Transfer the ham steaks to a large baking dish and repeat with the remaining ham steaks.
  • Make the glaze: Off the heat, add the glaze ingredients. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the brown sugar has melted. Remove from the heat.
  • Top the ham steaks: Top each piece of half with a pineapple slice then drizzle the glaze over the top.
  • Bake: Transfer to a preheated 400 degree F oven and cook for 10 minutes. Switch the oven to Broiil and cook until the glaze is bubbling.

If your baking dish is not large enough to lay the ham steaks in a single layer, it’s okay if they overlap slightly like you see here.

Pineapple Ham Steaks

These Pineapple Ham steaks are seared, topped with a slice of pineapple and an easy glaze, and finished in the oven. This easy ham steak recipe is on the table in under 30 minutes!

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F with an oven rack in the center position.

  • Cut each ham steak in half. Drain the pineapple, reserving the juice.

  • Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over MEDIUM heat. Add two ham steaks and cook, about 2 minutes per side, or until lightly browned. It’s okay if the butter browns, but reduce the heat under the skillet if it begins to burn. Transfer the ham steaks to a large baking dish and repeat with the remaining butter and ham steaks.

  • Off the heat, add the brown sugar, mustard, allspice, and 2 tablespoons reserved pineapple juice (reserve remaining juice) to the browned butter in the skillet. Place over LOW heat and cook, stirring constantly, for a minute, or until the brown sugar has melted. Remove from the heat and allow it to rest for a couple of minutes. The glaze should be thickened, but thin enough to pour off the end of a spoon on to the ham steaks.

  • Top each piece of half with a pineapple slice then drizzle the glaze over the ham and pineapple, smoothing it out with the back of a spoon (be sure there’s a little glaze on the pineapple and in the center of the ring). If glaze is too thick, add a little of the reserved pineapple juice to thin it, as needed. Try to get most of the glaze on the ham steaks, not the bottom of the baking dish.

  • Transfer the ham steaks to the oven and cook for 10 minutes. Switch the oven to BROIL and cook until the glaze is bubbling, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the oven and let the ham steaks rest in the baking pan for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
