Nothing says Halloween quite like Jill Thompson’s classic Scary Godmother. And luckily Image Comics has just released Scary Godmother: This Was Your Childhood, a compendium collecting all of our favorite tales and TWO NEW SCARY GODMOTHER STORIES!
The story is as Halloweenesque as can be: a magically charming tale of Hannah, a little girl who finds herself on the “Fright Side” where she meets Scary Godmother and other creepy but whimsical creatures. Hijinks ensue!
Scary Godmother debuted as a comic all the way back in 1997 from the long defunct Sirius Entertainment, before being collected by Dark Horse, and now Image Comics. It was also made into two animated specials by Canadian house Mainframe, Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktakular (2003) and Scary Godmother: The Revenge of Jimmy (2005) both of which aired for years on Cartoon Network – where they became holiday classics for a time, and solidified their place in Gen Z nostalgia.
Apparently, they are both in cartoon limbo now, however, as this 2021 piece at Vulture notes:
A DVD-quality version has over 3 million views and almost 10,000 comments lamenting the fact that Cartoon Network stopped airing it. YouTube video wizards even remastered it into 4K HDR in May 2020. Although the 4K quality makes it possible to spot funny early computer-animation mistakes, like shoes clipping into the ground, for me, it’s too shiny. Somehow, from the moment it opens on the mystical graveyard, it’s missing that nostalgic watercolor texture. (The DVD is sold out on Amazon and the Walmart website, and it costs as much as $160 on eBay.)
You can find both specials on YouTube quite easily and they do indeed have MILLIONS of views. Hey Hollywood, looking for something to reboot? SCARY GODMOTHER IS IT! Finish the story. Just check out Jill Thompson’s TikTok for ideas.

Video rights be darned, you can just buy the original comics, as mentioned, just out from Image. Also check out the Scary Godmother website, where you can buy dolls, pins and even MAKE-UP.
