Toorak: Olympic and world champion skier Malcolm Milne selling rare terrace

Olympian and world-champion skier Malcolm Milne is going for gold with the listing of a rare Toorak terrace.

Milne represented Australia at the 1968 and 1972 Winter Olympic Games and carried the Olympic Torch through Myrtleford on its way to the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

His greatest achievement on the slopes came in 1969 when he became the first Aussie to win a World Cup skiing event in a downhill race at Val-d’Isere in France, before coming third at an Italian World Cup event a few months later.

Guests to the home are greeted by a grand entrance hall.

His exploits followed the loss of his older brother, Ross Milne, who died while training for the 1964 Winter Olympics and sparked calls for Australians not to be allowed to compete against European winter athletes.

In recent years Milne has also found success in the real estate world, selling his former tobacco farm on the edge of Bright to Melbourne’s wealthy Deague family for more than $30m late in 2021.

The site has since been approved as a major new housing development for the popular tourist town.

His latest listing is a $3m-$3.3m terrace house at 290 Williams Rd that is part of a National Trust-classified row of Victorian-era residences.

Kay & Burton’s Nicole Gleeson is handling the sale, which is slated to be one of winters’ first auctions on June 1.

“It has that classic, pretty facade,” Ms Gleeson said.

“And you feel the grandness with the high ceilings.”

The double-storey address dates back to 1890 and comes with a sitting room and living room just beyond its front door. At the rear of the ground level there is also an open-plan living area with a family room and meals area set to either side of a central kitchen.

Upstairs there are three bedrooms, the main with an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, and one of the others with a concealable study space.

Records show Milne bought the home for $662,000 in 1999 and has regularly leased it out subsequently, with the residence advertised for $1650 in August last year.

While the home’s spacious dimensions and Carrara marble bathrooms would suit a buyer wanting to move in right away, Ms Gleeson noted there were also parts of the home where value could be added down the track.

The enviably located home is close to prominent local schools, it is across the road from Como Park and a short walk to trams along Toorak Rd.
