The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed that it has recovered N30 billion from the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu. Additionally, the anti-graft agency disclosed that 50 bank accounts are currently under investigation as part of the ongoing probe into financial mismanagement allegations involving Edu and the former CEO of the now-suspended National Social Investment Programme Authority (NSIPA), Halima Shehu.
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, provided the update in the March edition of the commission’s monthly e-magazine, EFCCAlert. He stated that the recovered amount has been deposited into the federal government’s coffers, with investigations still ongoing.
Olukoyede emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to combating corruption, stating that the suspension of the individuals involved was based on the agency’s investigations. He highlighted the complexity of the case, citing the need for thorough investigations and adherence to legal processes.
The EFCC chairman assured Nigerians that the agency is diligently pursuing the case, with over 50 bank accounts being scrutinized for money trails. He urged patience, noting the extensive workload of the commission and the meticulous nature of the investigation.
Both Edu and Shehu were suspended by President Tinubu approximately three months ago due to alleged financial mismanagement in the Humanitarian Ministry and the NSIP.
