X-Men Writer and Hellblazer Artist Unite For New Crime Series

BOOM! Studios will release a new series featuring X-Men writer Stephanie Phillips and Hellblazer artist Goran Sudzuka. Titled Red Before Black, the series is a “violent, hyper-kinetic women-led crime thriller.”

Stephanie Phillips, who has written other strong female-led comics including Black Widow and Wonder Woman, will pen the story for Red Before Black, telling the tale of the disgraced army veteran Val as she arrives in Florida with the goal of hunting down an infamous drug runner named Leo. A game of cat and mouse ensues, with Val quickly learning that she and Leo have an unexpected enemy in common. AIPT recently announced the new series and unveiled the main cover art and interior pages for the first issue ahead of its release on Aug. 7.

Red Before Black Writer Talks New Series’ “Weird” Setting

Stephanie Phillips discussed growing up in Florida and choosing it to be the setting for her new comic series in the press release for Red Before Black. “For me, Florida is like that relative that you make fun of but become defensive about the minute you hear someone else making fun of them,” she said. “I grew up there…I’ve been chased by water moccasins, had to call someone about alligator removals, thrown more than one hurricane party, and dressed like a pirate for the annual invasion of Tampa’s bay.”

Her experiences in Florida naturally made it the perfect location for Red Before Black‘s unique story. “There is truly no better place I could think of to set Red Before Black — a weird crime story with an even weirder setting. Val and Leo might be our main characters, but Florida is ever present and Goran truly draws the s*** outta this curious place that will forever feel like home for me, no matter where I live.”
