The New Moon Knight is Revealed and He’s Connected to the Avengers

Marvel’s new Moon Knight has finally been unmasked. And, not only do Earth’s Mightiest Heroes know who he is, some of them used to work with him.

Vengeance of the Moon Knight #5 drops readers into the middle of the Hunter’s Moon and Tigra’s battle against the new would-be Moon Knight. After being unmasked as Maximillian Coleridge, formerly the Shroud, the villain launches into a violent rage. Thankfully, Tigra has plenty of experience when it comes to dealing with the Shroud, especially since they used to fight alongside one another as members of the West Coast Avengers.

First introduced in 1976’s Super-Villain Team-Up #5 by writer Steve Englehart and artist Herb Trimpe, Max Coleridge grew up in an affluent home without any worries, at least until the night his parents were gunned down in cold blood. Following their deaths, Max resolved to become a hero in his own right. Over the years that followed, Max studied, trained, and researched all manner of martial arts, criminology, and even the Mystic Arts. Though his journey into mysticism stole away his ordinary sight, it left Coleridge with a sense of superhuman perception and imbued him with the power to summon and command Darkforce energies, leading him to take the mantle of the Shroud.

As the Shroud, Coleridge set out to make his mark as the world’s greatest hero. To that end, he took on various foes including the Red Skull and teamed up with unlikely allies ranging from Doctor Doom to Julia Carpenter during her time as Spider-Woman. Though he went to great lengths to keep up his villainous facade by acting as the leader of the supervillain team Night Shift, Coleridge regularly manipulated his fellow villains into unwittingly doing good at nearly every turn.

Over the course of his time tailing the former Spider-Woman, Coleridge came into contact with the West Coast Avengers. Despite initially believing him to be a threat, Hawkeye ultimately offered Coleridge a place of his own on the team, one which the Shroud turned down to maintain his villainous reputation. Even though their time together was relatively short-lived, the West Coast Avengers, and more specifically Moon Knight, left a major impression on the Shroud, so much so that he believed he could live up to Marc Spector’s old mantle by becoming the next Moon Knight in his stead.
