Marvel’s Dead X-Men just reached the one line they won’t cross. Luckily for Moira MacTaggert, it meant deciding to let her live.
After finally catching up with the version of Moira that has been hounding them at every turn, the eponymous heroes of Dead X-Men #4 call upon Rachel Summers to pull themselves and their enemy away from the timeline they found her in. Inside a fiery mental landscape, Rachel and MacTaggert discuss Xavier’s mission to go back in time and kill a younger Moira before her powers developed. While this would stop the rise of Orchis, it would also erase Krakoa and all its accomplishments, and the threat of that loss is just bad enough for them to decide to keep Moira alive.

Introduced all the way back in 1975’s X-Men #96 by writers Chris Claremont and Bill Mantlo and artist Dave Cockrum, Moira Mactaggert is an accomplished geneticist and close friend of Charles Xavier, at least in the majority of her lifetimes. As a mutant, Moira developed the ability to reset her entire timeline upon each of her deaths, all while retaining the knowledge and experience she had amassed prior.
Though Moira spent most of her lifetime working to better mutantkind and bridge the gap between them and the humans that feared them, things took a turn for the worse in her tenth life. Rather than continuing to fight back against mutantkind’s would-be oppressors, Moira joined Orchis in their war against the world’s mutants, determined to end up on the winning side of the fight instead of being relegated to another brutal defeat.

Because of Moira’s ability and the indelible role she has played in the rise of Orchis, the X-Men decided that the only to save themselves and the rest of the world was to go back to a point when her powers had yet to emerge and cut her life short at that moment. This would hypothetically prevent both the creation of Orchis and the rise of Dominions. Originally, the mechanized leaders of Orchis had intended to usher in the rise of their so-called machine god, only for Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister, to achieve Dominionhood in their place.

Since their debut in 1963, Marvel’s X-Men have been more than just another superhero team. While the team really hit its stride as the All New, All Different X-Men in 1975, Marvel’s heroic mutants have always operated as super-outcasts, protecting a world that hates and fears them for their powers.
