Spider-Gwen Makes a Rough Entrance into the Primary Marvel Universe

Spider-Gwen is finally making a home for herself in the primary Marvel Universe. Unfortunately, that isn’t nearly as easy for her civilian alter-ego as it is for her superpowered self.

Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #1 finds the Gwen Stacy of Earth-65 looking back on the life of the version of her who grew up in the reality of Earth-616, better known as the primary Marvel Universe. Though she understands the tragedy of her counterpart, she wasn’t anticipating making a life of her own in this world being so difficult. Even without having any direct ties to the primary Gwen, the titular Ghost-Spider has no way of proving who she is on paper, leaving her to step in and stop a robbery at the very same bank that just turned down her attempt to open an account.

Introduced in the pages of 2014’s Edge of Spider-Verse #2 by writer Jason Latour and artist Robbi Rodriguez, the Gwen Stacy of Earth-65 is a far cry from the version of the character longtime fans are familiar with. As a teen, Gwen developed a close friendship with the likes of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, the latter of whom she formed the band The Mary Janes alongside. After being bitten by a genetically engineered spider, Gwen embarked upon a superheroic career as Spider-Woman.

Gwen’s worst tragedy came when her world’s Peter, desperate to be like the web-slinging hero he idolized, subjected himself to an experiment that transformed him into the bestial Lizard. In the ensuing battle, Gwen unleashed her full fury on her foe, all without ever knowing that she was fighting her friend. When Peter reverted to his human form, he died from the injuries he sustained, driving Gwen to become a better, more understanding hero than ever before.

Spider-Man

Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics’ most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man’s most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character’s lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O’Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.

Spider-Man is also the basis of several live-action film franchises and numerous animated television series. He is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. While he’s changed a lot over the decades, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee gave the world an unforgettable hero when they created Spider-Man.
