The following contains major spoilers for The Ultimates #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Marvel’s new Ultimates have finally arrived — and their first mission is going back in time to rewrite the history of their world.
The Ultimates #1 opens to the harrowing sight of the rubble and wreckage left in the aftermath of the terrorist attack supposedly carried out by a young Tony Stark. Of course, Tony and his fellow heroes know full well that he had nothing to do with it, though they don’t have any real way of letting the rest of the world in on that fact. Fortunately, these new Ultimates have a time machine, not to mention a whole two years to figure out how to use it to save their world.

The reality of Earth-6160, otherwise known as the current Ultimate Universe, was first seen in the pages of 2023’s Ultimate Invasion #1 by Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch. Discovered by the villainous variant of Reed Richards known as the Maker, Earth-6160 was nearly identical to the original Ultimate Universe in every single way. Because of this, it was easy for the Maker to use his resources and knowledge to rewrite its history as he saw fit, giving rise to a world nearly devoid of the heroes who would have otherwise come to inhabit it.
Throughout his efforts, the Maker enlisted the help of Tony Stark’s father, Howard, who in this timeline went on to become a surprisingly heroic version of Kang the Conqueror. Though Howard was able to defeat the Maker, he only ended up trapping the villain within his own stronghold for a predetermined amount of time. As such, heroes such as the Tony Stark and Reed Richards of Earth-6160 have worked tirelessly to find some way of setting things right before the Maker returns to lay waste to anyone still standing when that time comes.

Although Tony and his allies have quickly taken to playing the role of heroes in their native timeline, the events of 2023’s Ultimate Universe #1 by Jonathan Hickman and artist Stefano Caselli ensured that they would be facing an uphill battle at every step of the way. While the Maker has been trapped, his shadow cabinet of other world leaders has taken it upon themselves to frame Iron Lad and the others as violent terrorists by using Tony’s own armor as a bomb.
