Jackpot and Black Cat Are Blackmailed Into a Sticky Situation

The following contains spoilers for Jackpot and Black Cat #2, on sale next week

The mysterious new criminal app, Obscura, is blackmailing people into committing crimes, and in this CBR exclusive preview of next week’s Jackpot and Black Cat #2, we see that that includes Mary Jane Watson and Felicia Hardy, as they have to pull off a heist in a location with a candy storefront (which makes for quite a sticky situation).

Jackpot and Black Cat #2 is from writer Celeste Bronfman, artists Emilio Laiso and Giada Belviso, colorist Brian Reber and letterer Ariana Maher, and it continues the story introduced in the first issue, where Mary Jane, who has recently become the superhero known as Jackpot (using a special power gauntlet that randomly generates super-abilities for Mary Jane, like a modern day version of the Dial H for HERO dial) discovers that her friend, Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat, was being forced to commit a robbery from a supervillain gambling casino. Jackpot learns that Black Cat has a new girlfriend, and the bad guys behind this new app, Obscura, are threatening her life if Black Cat doesn’t work for them. When Jackpot tried to take them down, the app revealed that it would kill Mary Jane’s partner, Paul, if she didn’t also comply with their wishes.

Mary Jane and Black Cat didn’t use to have an awful lot in common besides both being ex-girlfriends of Spider-Man, but recently, working together has given Mary Jane the confidence to try to make it as a superhero, and it was Black Cat’s support that led Mary Jane to finally decide to become Jackpot full-time. Therefore, Mary Jane naturally feels like helping Black Cat out, even if it has now gotten Mary Jane ensnared in Obscura’s web, as well.

EXCLUSIVE: Spider-Man and His Allies Suffer a Major Betrayal as Gang War Concludes

Spider-Man and his allies suffer a major betrayal as Gang War concludes in this CBR exclusive preview of next week’s Amazing Spider-Man #44

In the preview pages, we see Mary Jane and Black Cat meet up, and debate whether they want to go through with the heist that Obscura is making them pull off. However, they’re both fully committed, and so they enter a candy store that serves as a front for some sort of criminal enterprise. Black Cat uses bubble gum to literally gum up the works of the candy store, leading to a slushy explosion that covers Jackpot and Black Cat’s exit.

In the first issue of the series, Black Cat explains that she doesn’t have the patience to count to three, so she counts to two, instead, and here, she and Jackpot attack some guards on the count of two. What this candy store is a front for, and who is behind Obscura are both mysteries you’ll have to find out next week when Jackpot and Black Cat #2 is released.
