Donald Duck is Surprisingly Worthy of the Power of Thor

Marvel has been owned by Disney for almost fifteen years now, and yet in that long association, Marvel has yet to produce Disney comic books (despite actually having a line of Disney comic books in the 1990s), but that is changing, as later this month, Marvel will release its first Uncle Scrooge comic book in the one-shot, Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime, and now Marvel is expanding its Disney comic book product line with a brand-new What If…? one-shot that will feature Donald Duck receiving the mighty powers of Thor!

This follows the previously announced What If…? that shows Donald Duck transforming into Wolverine. Marvel & Disney: What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor #1 is produced by a veteran Disney comic book creative team, writers Steve Behling and Riccardo Secchi and artist Lorenzo Pastrovicchio.

The story in the issue finds Donald Duck taking his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, on an archaeological adventure, but when they run into the Stone Ducks of Saturn, Donald is forced to hide out, where he finds a hammer that transforms him into Thor. This is a riff on the original first Thor story by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and Larry Lieber, from 1962’s Journey Into Mystery #83 (the main cover for the one-shot is an homage to Kirby’s original cover for that issue).

Frank Miller’s latest Marvel variant cover featuring Uncle Scrooge has sparked a major reaction from comic book fans on social media

What is Thor’s past history with Mjolnir being wielded by animals?

An interesting aspect of Donald Duck becoming Thor in this story is that this isn’t the first time that a non-human (or even non-alien) animal weilded Thor’s mighty hammer. In a classic storyline during Walter Simonson’s iconic 1980s run as the writer/artist of Thor, Loki had an evil plot that turned Thor into a frog. It is cool to see Simonson contribute a variant cover for this one-shot, although the cover Simonson is homaging from his run is the iconic first cover (which shocked the comic book world by revealing an alien, Beta Ray Bill, wielding Mjolnir instead of Thor), and not the cover where Thor turned into a frog.

Of course, in this one-shot, not only is THOR an animal, but ALL of the characters are now animals. The editor of the one-shot, Mark Panicccia, joked, “When we saw the designs for the Stone Ducks of Saturn and The Destroyer we literally laughed out loud. I can honestly say I never thought I’d see something like this in my career. I gotta pinch myself to make sure it’s not a dream.”
