The following contains major spoilers for NYX #4, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
One of mutantkind’s most unexpected heroes has just defined mutant culture for an entire generation.
After terrorizing the citizens of New York City, the mutant menace known as the Krakoan, formerly Hellion, finally meets his match in the pages of NYX #4. Though he is more than ready to face off against the likes of Ms. Marvel, the sudden appearance of Prodigy catches the villain off guard. Better than just beating the Krakoan down, Prodigy takes the time to school his old ally on what mutant culture really means, and the X-Men are a far better definition of it than Krakoa ever was.

NYX is just one of numerous X-Men team-up titles that are part of Marvel Comics’ From the Ashes initiative. These books and the various solo titles that accompany them all follow their respective leads in the wake of the end of the Krakoan Era. While teams such as the X-Men proper and their Uncanny counterparts are doing everything they can to help prepare the next generation of mutants for everything the world will throw at them, more organically formed lineups such as the stars of NYX have found themselves fighting entirely different battles on behalf of their brethren.
NYX features Kamala Khan, better known as Ms. Marvel, who finds a fast friendship in her fellow mutant hero and ESU student, Sophie Cuckoo. Over the course of the series so far, the pair have found further kinships with Anole, Prodigy, and even Laura Kinney, aka Wolverine, no matter how at odds the latter would have liked to think herself at the series’ outset. Though the unofficial team has faced off against genuine villains in their time together, NYX largely focuses on the social nuances of the post-Krakoan status quo.

David Alleyne, aka Prodigy, made his Marvel Comics debut in the pages of 2003’s New Mutants #4 by writers Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir and artist Keron Grant. Shortly after David’s powers activated, he came to realize what he was and, more importantly, what he was capable of doing with his astonishing new abilities. A super genius capable of mimicking and absorbing the skills and knowledge of those around him, David has proven himself time and time again as the mutant hero Prodigy. Though he was one of those to lose their powers following the Decimation, he kept fighting alongside his fellow mutants all the way up until his death. And, when resurrected on Krakoa with his powers once again intact, he wasted no time getting back into action as a part of X-Factor Investigations.
