Out of all these years I’ve done my book to movie adaptation lists these past couple years by far have been the most rollercoaster experience –for obvious reasons.
There’s always SOME change and moving of dates but these past years so many things postponed, productions halted, things moved around — from the effects of 2020 to the SAG-AFTRA strike. It was hard to keep up. But here we are: it’s time to explore all the books becoming movies & tv shows in 2024.
This list is always a working list but it’s going to be probably very fluid this year depending on how things go so I fully expect things to be moved up, moved back and every which way. There are a lot of books optioned for movies hanging in the balance right now and I will keep you up to date on those!
Keep checking back because I’m sure I will have updates weekly for upcoming book to movie adaptations for 2024!

Upcoming Books Becoming Movies & TV Shows For 2024
I’ve broken it down by books being turned into movies and books being turned into tv shows with each being broken down by month so you can check for each month.
Books Becoming Movies In 2024
Book to Movie Adaptations For January 2024
A Beautiful Wedding
Out Now
Starring: Dylan Sprouse, Virginia Gardener, Libe Barer, Austin North
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Premise: “It follows Abby and Travis, who after a crazy night in Las Vegas, discover they are married. They head to Mexico for a honeymoon with friends and family.” (IMDB)
This is a sequel to Beautiful Disaster which came to film Spring 2023.
The Tiger’s Apprentice
Out Now
Starring: Henry Golding, Brandon Soo Hoo, Lucy Liu, Sandra Oh, Michelle Yeoh, Bowen Yang
Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy Adventure; Children’s Books To Movie Adaptation
Premise: “Tom Lee, a Chinese-American boy, after the death of his grandmother, has to be apprenticed to the talking tiger Mr. Hu and learn ancient magic to become the new guardian of an ancient phoenix.” (IMDB)
Wow FINALLY this one is out. This star studded animated film has been one that has been pushed back for years thanks to all the post-2020 delays. Seemed like a turbulent ride to finally getting it released so I’m glad to see it.
Book to Movie Adaptations For February 2024
Orion and the Dark
Out Now
Starring: Jacob Tremblay, Paul Walter Hauser, Colin Hanks, Mia Akemi Brown
Genre: animated fantasy adventure; children’s book to movie adaptation
Premise: “A boy with an active imagination faces his fears on an unforgettable journey through the night with his new friend: a giant, smiling creature named Dark.” (IMDB)
Riley and I got this out from the library a few years ago and adored it! It looks so cute.
Argylle
Out Now
Starring: Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, Catherine O’Hara, Bryan Cranston
Genre: Spy action comedy
Premise: “A reclusive author who writes espionage novels about a secret agent and a global spy syndicate realizes the plot of the new book she’s writing starts to mirror real-world events, in real time.” (IMDB)
One of the most wild pre-buzz for this star-studded movie and the book (that only came out a month before the film). Between the marketing efforts and the (now debunked) Swiftie theory that Taylor Swift = Elly Conway, this book to film adaptation was EVERYWHERE.
Dragon Keeper
Out February 24, 2024
Starring: Bill Nighy, Anthony Howell, Bill Bailey, Mayalinee Griffiths
Genre: Fantasy (children’s); animated film
Premise: “In ancient China, dragons were once friends of humans, but our greed ended their alliance, and these magical creatures were hunted down. Years later, in a remote fortress, a young slave girl, Ping, strikes up an unlikely friendship..” (IMDB)
According to Hulu’s press page that shares their February 2024 schedule, it will be available to stream February 24. I’ve seen an April 5 date thrown around but that could be potential theatrical release for the US. I will keep an eye on it (and update accordingly) but for now I’m going with what’s on Hulu’s site as I know they bought streaming rights for North America.
Book to Movie Adaptations For March 2024
Spaceman
Streaming March 1, 2024
Starring: Adam Sandler, Paul Dano, Carey Mulligan
Genre: Sci-fi Drama
Premise: “Jakub Procházka, orphaned as a boy and raised in the Czech countryside by his grandparents, overcomes his odds to become the country’s first astronaut.” (IMDB)
Thought to originally be coming out in 2022, Johan Renck confirmed this sci-fi space adaptation would be out in 2023 but due to the SAG-AFTRA strike it got delayed again to 2024.
I’m honestly really interested in this movie (streaming on Netflix on March 1) — I tend to like Adam Sandler in more serious roles which is the vibe I get from this one based on reviews of the book. Seems like sci-fi meets literary fiction.
Dune (Part 2)
March 1, 2024
Starring: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh
Genre: Science Fiction Fantasy
Premise: “Paul Atreides unites with Chani and the Fremen while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.” (IMDB)
Part 2 of the two-part adaptation of Dune!
The Book of Mirrors
(Sleeping Dogs)
March 22, 2024
Starring: Karen Gillan, Russell Crowe, Marton Csokas, Tommy Flanagan, Lucy-Rose Leonard
Genre: Crime Thriller
Premise: “An ex-homicide detective (Russell Crowe) with memory loss is forced to solve a brutal murder, only to uncover chilling secrets from his forgotten past.” (IMDB)
This is one of those situations where the book is something I would not be interested in reading but the movie looks like a good time. The film turns the true story into more of a comedy spy adventure based on the events and the account in the book and fictionalizes it a bit more.
Black Flies
March 29, 2024
Starring: Kali Reis, Tye Sheridan, Katherine Waterston, Sean Penn, Mike Tyson
Genre: Medical Drama/Thriller
Premise: “A young paramedic makes his way through his first year on the job in New York City.” (IMDB)
This one looks more dark and gritty from what I’m reading of both book reviews and film reviews. It looks interesting — that’s for sure. The more medical/rescue dramas I watch are more of the Grey’s/Chicago Fire variety and this does not look like it is in that vein.
Book to Movie Adaptations For April 2024
Someone Like You
April 2, 2024
Starring: Sarah Fisher, Jake Allyn, Lynn Collins, Robyn Lively, Bart Johnson
Genre: Romance
Premise: “Based on the novel by #1 NYTimes bestselling author Karen Kingsbury, “Someone Like You” is an achingly beautiful love story. After the tragic loss of his best friend, a grieving young architect launches a search for her secret twin sister.” (IMDB)
Christian romance author Karen Kingsbury self funded this book to movie adaptation and the book is part of the Baxter Family series. If you like Hallmark feeling films, check this one out.
The Ministry of Ungentlmanly Warfare
April 19, 2024
Starring: Eiza González, Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Henry Golding, Alex Pettyfer
Genre: Military Non-fiction (book); Action Spy Comedy (film)
Premise: “The British military recruits a small group of highly-skilled soldiers to strike against Nazi forces behind enemy lines during World War II.” (IMDB)
This is one of those situations where the book is something I would not be interested in reading but the movie looks like a good time. The film turns the true story into more of a comedy spy adventure based on the events and the account in the book and fictionalizes it a bit more.
Book to Movie Adaptations For May 2024
Turtles All The Way Down
May 2, 2024
Starring: Isabela Merced, J. Smith-Cameron, Judy Reyes, Hannah Marks
Genre: YA romantic drama
Premise: “Aza Holmes. It’s not easy being Aza, but she’s trying… trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, and a good student, all while navigating an endless barrage of invasive, obsessive thoughts that she cannot control. When she reconnects with Davis, her childhood crush, Aza is confronted with fundamental questions about her potential for love, happiness, friendship, and hope in the face of her mental illness” (IMDB)
Huge John Green fan over here (as many of you longtime readers know) and this YA book to movie adaptation is one I’ve been waiting for since it was optioned (and then in adaptation purgatory). A fabulous book and I have high hopes for the movie!
The Idea of You
Out May 2, 2024
Starring: Anne Hathaway, Nicholas Galitzine, Reid Scott, Ella Rubin
Genre: Romantic Comedy/Drama
Premise: “While chaperoning her teenage daughter’s trip to Coachella, Solène, a 40-year-old single mother, begins an unexpected romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet.” (IMDB)
I have been waiting for this adaptation since it was optioned!! This book had all of us in its clutches back in 2017/2018.
While yes the romance was good, there was so much good stuff exploring women in regards to aging and worth in society as a woman of a certain age. I hope the adaptation retains that part of it too (especially being a woman in her later 30’s who feels so much of this stuff right now).
It will be dropping on Amazon Prime Video on May 2.
Thelma the Unicorn
Out May 17, 2024
Starring: Brittany Howard, Will Forte, Jon Heder, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson, Maliaka Mitchell
Genre: Animated Film; based on a picture book
Premise: “When a rare pink and glitter-filled moment of fate makes Thelma the Pony’s wish of being a unicorn come true, she rises to instant international pop-superstar stardom, but at an unexpected cost” (IMDB)
We own this picture book in this house and it’s definitely Riley’s most anticipated book to movie adaptation for kids this year! It’s so cute and can’t wait to stream this one on Netflix!
Book to Movie Adaptations For June 2024
Queen’s Gambit
(Movie Name: Firebrand)
Out June 21, 2024
Starring: Alicia Vikander, Jude Law, Eddie Marsan
Genre: Historical Drama/Thriller
Premise: “follows legendary Queen of England, Katherine Parr, and her quest to survive the perilous last months in the life of her ailing and abusive husband, Henry VIII” (IMDB)
As a historical fiction lover (especially relating to the Tudors), I’m surprised I’ve never read of this one. It looks like the film will be more historical thriller but that’s not the vibe I got from reading about the book so I will be curious how they tweak it for adaptation.
It debuted at Cannes in 2023 and I’m excited to see it on the big screen as a lover of period dramas.

It Ends With Us
Out June 21, 2024
Starring: Blake Lively, Brandon Sklenar, Jenny Slate, Justin Baldoni, Hasan Minhaj
Genre: Romance/Drama
Premise: “Lily believes she’s found true love with Ryle, but when a painful incident triggers past trauma, she must decide if love alone can carry her marriage through. However, things are complicated when her first love returns to her life.” (IMDB)
Tiktok favorite Colleen Hoover will have her first book to movie adaptation this year! It was originally slated for February 2024 but got pushed back to June I’m assuming related to the strike.

Book to Movie Adaptations For August 2024
Harold and the Purple Crayon
Out August 2, 2024
Starring: Zachary Levi, Zooey Deschanel, Camille Guaty, Jermaine Clement
Genre: Children’s Book; Animated Film
Premise: “A young boy named Harold embarks on a magical mission with the help of his purple crayon” (IMDB)
Aww a book from my childhood becoming a film! Many attempts have been made for decades and, after an original 2023 release date, this one is finally coming to the big screen in 2024!
Book to Movie Adaptations For October 2024
White Bird
Out October 4, 2024
Starring: Gillian Anderson, Helen Mirren, Olivia Ross
Premise: “A young Jewish girl hidden away by a boy and his family in Nazi-occupied France during World War II.” (IMDB)
If you are familiar with Wonder (and the expansion on the characters in Wonder in Auggie & Me) then you might be familiar with Julian’s grandmother who got a graphic novel called White Bird written about her story.
I genuinely don’t think you need to be familiar AT ALL with Wonder or the characters to enjoy Grandmère’s (played by Helen Mirren!!!) story (both the graphic novel and movie).
This was supposed to release in 2023 but got pushed back due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Book to Movie Adaptations For November 2024
The Amateur
November 8, 2024
Starring: Rami Malek, Catriona Balfe, Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Julianne Nicholson
Genre: Espionage Thriller
Premise: “Follows a CIA cryptographer, who manages to blackmail his agency into training him to let him go after a group of terrorist who killed his wife in London” (IMDB)
This classic spy thriller novel has been confirmed by Disney as November 8, 2024 release.
Confirmed For 2024 But Still Need A Release Date
Mothers’ Instinct
TBA 2024

Genre: Psychological Thriller
Premise: “Alice and Celine live a traditional lifestyle with successful husbands and sons of the same age. Life’s perfect harmony is suddenly shattered after a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion and paranoia combine to unravel their sisterly bond.” (IMDB)
I really enjoyed this book — super wild ride! It was originally translated from French and their was even a French adaptation of it.
It’s been confirmed for 2024 but actual release date TBA. Enjoy the trailer while we wait for a firm release.
I’m excited to see Anne and Jessica in this — great casting in my opinion.
Uglies
TBA 2024
Starring: Joey King, Chase Stokes, Laverne Cox, Kelly Gale
Genre: Dystopian; YA Book to Movie Adaptation
Premise: “A world in which a compulsory operation wipes out physical differences and makes everyone pretty.” (IMDB)
If you would have told me back when I read this series in 2007 that in 2024 this would be one of the YA books becoming movies I’d be covering — I would be shocked!
I feel like I remember way earlier around the time I read it rumblings of an adaptation that never panned out (stayed in development I guess) but now filming has wrapped on this film coming to Netflix and Netflix has confirmed 2024 (official date TBA)! I honestly hope it’s good because the concept is so interesting!

Listen, Aussie books (especially Aussie YA though, while this is coming of age, this is not YA) just hit differently and I’m so excited for this adaptation! It is streaming on Netflix.
Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale
Out Now
Starring: Elaine Cassidy, Hazel Doupe, Stephanie Levi-John, Amy De Bhrún
Genre: Supernatural Drama/Mystery
Premise: A small UK town named Sanctuary, a town where witches live openly, is shaken by murder accusations after a boy is discovered dead from an accident. (IMDB)
I had NEVER heard of this book and I’m shocked because it looks up my alley and normally I feel like I’m up on book releases — though it did come out in 2020 so who knows where my head was at.
It was pitched as Practical Magic meets Big Little Lies and that sounds VERY good to me.
You can find it streaming now on AMC+ and Sundance Plus.
Masters of the Air
Out Now
Starring: Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Elliot Warren
Genre: War Drama (based on the non-fiction history book with the same name)
Premise: “During WWII, five miles above the ground and behind enemy lines, ten men inside a bomber known as a “Flying Fortress” battle unrelenting flocks of German fighters.” (IMDB)
This tv adaptation takes the story of the story of the 100th Bomb Group during WW2 and turns it into an action war thriller/drama in the vein of Band of Brothers.
You can stream it now on AppleTV+.

Genre: Mystery/Crime Action
Premise: “Colter Shaw travels the country in his old-school RV, helping police and private citizens solve crimes and locate missing persons–until his latest case changes everything” (IMDB)
This Is Us star Justin Hartley is on to his new tv series with this Jefferey Deaver series adaptation. I’ve seen these ads/commercials every two seconds but I love me some Justin Hartley so I’m not mad. It looks fun!
One Day
Out Now
Starring: Leo Woodall, Ambika Mod, Amber Grappy
Genre: Romantic Dramedy
Premise: “Emma and Dexter meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways.” (IMDB)
I’m actually so glad they decided to do another adaptation of this book! The first was a film but this one is a tv series and I think it’s going to be so much better.
Breathtaking
Out February 19, 2024
Starring: Joanne Froggatt, George Georgiou, Lucy Montgomery
Genre: Memoir (book); medical drama (tv series)
Premise: “Drama series following a doctor looking after the most gravely unwell patients in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic.” (IMDB)
This ITV series is premiering in Britain and turns NHS doctor Rachel Clarke’s memoir into a tv drama series. I’m not sure when/if it will stream in the U.S. but I’d imagine it would be on Britbox at some point.
I had a hard enough with the season of Grey’s Anatomy that explored the events unfolding in 2020 — still too soon for me personally, whew.
Shogun

The Three-Body Problem

Starring: Saamer Usmani, Liam Cunningham, Marlo Kelly, Jovan Adepo, Rosalind Chao, John Bradley

An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion.” (IMDB)
This upcoming tv series based on a book series looks interesting. Huge in scope and coming out on Netflix from the Game of Thrones creators (with even some familiar GoT alum) — it’s a must watch for me!
Apples Never Fall
Out March 14, 2024
Starring: Pooja Shah, Jane Hall, Ana Maria Belo, Montana Jones, Annette Bening
Genre: Mystery Drama
Premise: “The Delaney family seems happy but Joy disappears, forcing her husband and four adult children to reassess their family history.” (IMDB)
While this is wasn’t my favorite Liane Moriarty book out of all I’ve read of hers, I did really enjoy it and think it is going to make for a terrific adaptation. Big Little Lies was a smash hit and I hope this one is as strong.
You can find this one on Peacock as a Peacock Original.
Chasing Hillary
(The Girls on the Bus)
Out March 14, 2024
Starring: Natasha Behnam, Adam Kaplan, Rose Jackson Smith, Melissa Benoist, Hettienne Park
Genre: Political Drama (inspired by Amy Chozick’s memoir)
Premise: “Four female journalists who follow the every move of a parade of flawed presidential candidates, finding friendship, love, and a scandal that could take down not just the presidency but our entire democracy along the way.” (IMDB)
While the inspiration of this was the journalist’s memoir following Hillary’s run for the presidency, this adaptation won’t be about that election or the real politicians.
It’s using it more as a launchpad for the story of the female journalists on the bus covering a presidential election campaign trail and fictionalizing the political players.

Genre: Historical Fiction Drama
Premise: “A Jewish family is determined to survive and reunite after being separated in World War II” (IMDB)
Hulu has brought this novel centering around a Jewish family in Poland during the Holocaust onto the screen for a tv mini series. While the book is fiction, it is actually based on the author’s own family history.
Book to TV Show Adaptations For April 2024
The Talented Mr. Ripley

Starring: Andrew Scott, Johnny Flynn, Dakota Fanning
Genre: psychological thriller
Premise: “A grifter named Ripley living in New York during the 1960s is hired by a wealthy man to begin a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.” (IMDB)
Patricia Highsmith’s iconic novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley, is getting the adaptation treatment again — this time as a film. I loved the 1999 film adaptation but this tv series looks fantastic too!
A Great Improvisation
(Franklin)
April 12, 2024

Genre: Historical Drama (tv series); biography (book)
Premise: In December 1776, Benjamin Franklin is world famous for his electrical experiments. But his passion and power are put to the test when he embarks on a secret mission to France — with the fate of American independence hanging in the balance.
Stacy Shiff’s biographical non-fiction book is being turned into a limited historical drama series on AppleTV+. It explores a story of something that happened, at age 70, when he outmaneuvered British spies and French informers while engineering the Franco-American alliance of 1778.

This true crime book about the case of Reena Virk is set to be a limited crime drama series (8 episodes) streaming on Hulu this Spring.
Book to TV Show Adaptations For May 2024
Dark Matter
May 8 , 2024
Starring: Jennifer Connelly, Joel Edgerton, Oakes Fegley, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson
Genre: science fiction
Premise: “A man is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could’ve lived, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from a most terrifying foe: himself.” (IMDB)
I recommend Black Crouch’s books so often to SO many different readers and I will be sitting ready to watch this on Apple TV+ when it premieres. Crouch is a showrunner and it’s definitely a buzzy book to tv series adaptation for 2024!
The Tattooist of Auschwitz
May 2, 2024
Starring: Anna Próchniak, Melanie Lynskey, Harvey Keitel, Jonah Hauer-King
Genre: Historical Drama
Premise: “Based on the eponymously titled novel, this is the powerful real-life story of Lale Sokolov, a Jewish prisoner who was tasked with tattooing ID numbers on prisoners’ arms in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during World War Two.” (IMDB)
This best-selling historical fiction and popular book club pick is coming to Peacock in 2024 (and Sky Atlantic in the UK).
Romancing Mister Bridgerton
(Bridgerton season 3)
May 16, 2024
Starring: Nicola Coughlan, Luke Newton, Claudia Jessie
Genre: historical romance
Premise: This season is Colin and Penelope’s story — following the fallout of her overhearing his rejection of her romantically and now trying to ditch her longtime crush on him and decides to double down to find a husband to allow her to get away from her family and continue her work as Lady Whistledown — an endeavor that proves to be a struggle. Colin, feeling the distance in their friendship, tries to repair things by giving her lessons to find a husband. (Behold all the friends to lovers goodness to enjoy in that endeavor!)
I’m such a big fan of this book series and these adaptations have been EVERYTHING. I was a little perplexed why we were getting Penelope and Colin’s story before Benedict’s for season 3 (Benedict’s story is book 3 in the series) but I saw they wanted more Benedict storylines in these seasons before he settles down.
I’m excited and I know Nicola Coughlan is going to bring the house down this season! I loved this book but I’m loving what she brings to Penelope in the series for me. The trailer clip is EVERYTHING.
Part one will drop on Netflix on May 16 and part 2 will be June 13.

I love this book and this is definitely a top contender for my most anticipated book becoming a tv show in 2024! If you enjoyed Normal People by Sally Rooney, check this one out!
Presumed Innocent

Possible 2024 Book To Screen Adaptations
These are adaptations that have NOT been confirmed for 2024 but, based on digging and other signs I see, that I THINK have a good possibility of coming out in 2024. My eyes will be on these ones especially to bring you up to date information on if they are confirmed, pulled or whatever.
Disclaimer
TBA
Starring: Cate Blanchett, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kevin Kline, Lesley Manville, Louis Partridge
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Premise: “When an intriguing novel appears on the bedside table of a journalist whose career has been built on revealing transgressions, she is horrified to realize she is a key character in a story that she had hoped was long buried in the past. A story that reveals her darkest secret. A secret she thought was hers alone.” (AppleTV)
This one sounds SO good and I had never heard of the book. A creepy premise — reading a mysterious book only to realize it’s not fiction and it’s telling a secret of yours that you have no idea how anybody else knows?
There’s been no release date or confirmation other than a couple of media outlets also suspecting it will be out in 2024. It looks like production is completed so I have a strong feeling 2024 is when it will drop on AppleTV+. Will be keeping my eye on it.
