Shut In Theater: Weekend Reading 211

Is it hot in here, or is it just decades worth of ill-advised human-caused climate change? Either way, it’s time for Weekend Reading 211!

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I’m eager to check out Bacon Lad by Brandon Clarkson and Sacha Jones. Having previously enjoyed the work Jones did on Data Visualization, I’m sure I will enjoy this ‘zine an equal amount. That being said, I’m going to have to read it while eating a nice bacon breakfast burrito, or something – the meme may be dead, but ya girl is still a certified bacon fiend. Then as far as prose goes, I’ve finally gotten my hands on Britney Spears: The Woman in Me by Britney Spears. Since my spouse Rebecca Oliver Kaplan read this months ago I have heard a lot about it, and I am eager to enter the conversation myself!

DEAN SIMONS: Still on my Judge Dredd Megazine catchup. Reached August 2023’s #459, so I am now officially less than a year behind. About ten 100+ page issues of comics and articles to go. Once again, I am really, really enjoying Spector. Created by John Wagner & Carlos Ezquera before the latter’s untimely passing. The baton has officially passed to Dan Cornwell who is doing a stellar job of making the offbeat robot detective series his own. I am also really pleased to see the return of Mega-City 2099 – shorts that are a heavy homage to the very early Judge Dredd comics, before the lore and world were fully defined (and those involved knew what they were doing with him). Ken Niemand and Conor Boyle expertly give these vignettes a quality that feels both present and a leap back to 1977. Solid stuff.

TAIMUR DAR: I’ve adored the Spy x Family anime which has led me to read the manga by Tatsuya Endo. The most recent volume to be released in English, Spy x Family Volume 11, was finally available for me to borrow on the libby digital app. So you can bet I’ll likely be devouring the full volume likely in one sitting sometime during the weekend. Definitely helps as I wait for the recently announced third season.
