Xenoblade Chronicles X is one of the few remaining major Nintendo games stuck on Wii U. To add insult to injury, it’s the only entry in the beloved Monolith Soft RPG series unavailable on Switch. But that will change soon, as Nintendo is releasing Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on March 20, 2025. Much like the first game’s upgraded edition for Switch, the upcoming remaster features overhauled graphics and quality-of-life improvements. The physical version of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is available to preorder now for $60 at GameStop.
We will update this preorder guide when it’s available at Best Buy and Target, but don’t expect Xenoblade Chronicles X to be listed on Amazon or Walmart until launch. Neither retailer has offered preorders for Nintendo Switch exclusives in months.
$60
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is an enhanced version of the 2015 Wii U game. Along with visual upgrades that, based on the reveal trailer, appear substantial, you’ll also find a few new story elements that let you dive deeper into the world of New Los Angeles. Beyond that, it sounds like a faithful recreation of this standalone entry in the Xeno series.
Nintendo Switch Online owners can play with 31 other players across the world in several different multiplayer modes: Squad Tasks, Online Missions, and Global Nemesis Battles.
Set in 2054, the game follows a small group of humans as they flee their destroyed Earth and crash onto the mysterious planet of Mira. You’ll be tasked with doing everything you can to bring humanity back from the brink, and the story is just as nuanced as all the others in the Xenoblade Chronicles series. There’s no need to have played any other Xenoblade games before diving in, as the story is a standalone experience.
Our original Xenoblade Chronicles X review gave it an impressive 8/10, thanks to its incredible landscapes, complex combat systems, and rewarding character progression. Though it has been out of print. for years, Prima’s Xenoblade Chronicles X Collector’s Edition Guide will likely still be a handy resource, if you have it. If you want a copy of the 512-page hardcover guidebook, used copies are available for $51 and up at Amazon.
Xenoblade Chronicles Nintendo Amiibo Figures
Nintendo has released five Amiibo figures based on Xenoblade Chronicles characters. Three of those figures are currently available for retail price. Shulk, the main character in the first Xenoblade Chronicles, is available at Target for $16. A 2-pack featuring Noah and Mio from Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is in stock for $40 at Amazon and GameStop. The other two characters, Pyra and Mythra, aren’t available for retail price at this time, so you’ll need to pay a premium for the 2-pack. if you want to collect all five Xenoblade Amiibo.
Xenoblade Chronicles Mainline Series
Even though you don’t need to play the mainline Xenoblade Chronicles series first, all role-playing fans who own the Nintendo Switch should give them a try. Xenoblade is arguably the best RPG series on Switch and perhaps even the best trilogy in general.
You’ll want to start at the beginning with Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, the updated Switch version of the 2010 Wii game. The most recent entry in the series, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, is also available for a small discount. The second and third Xenoblade Chronicles games have large expansions that you’ll want to play, too.
Finding physical US versions of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a bit tricky, though the UK version is readily available on Amazon and works fine in all regions, though you’ll need to make a European eShop account or buy a physical version of Torna Country, the game’s great expansion, to experience the whole story.
