Comment Regarding “Antireflux Surgery Versus Antireflux Medication and Risk of Esophageal Adenocarcinoma in Patients With Barrett’s Esophagus”



I read with great interest the study by Åkerström et al,1 who evaluated the role of antireflux surgery with fundoplication in preventing progression to esophageal adenocarcinoma in Barrett’s esophagus compared with antireflux medication. Finally, they found that patients treated with antireflux surgery did not have a lower risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma than those treated with antireflux medication. In addition, the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma in Barrett’s esophagus patients who underwent antireflux surgery increased with longer follow-up.
