Michelada vs Bloody Mary – What’s The Difference?

What’s the difference between a Michelada and Bloody Mary? Two “hair of the dog” Mexican drinks?

Side by side pictures of the Michelada vs Bloody Mary.

Two “hair of the dog” Mexican drinks are permanent fixtures on boozy brunch menus – the Michelada and Bloody Mary. But, what’s the difference between the Michelada vs Bloody Mary? Both are savory, spicy and touted as the ultimate hangover remedy.

What’s the main difference between the two outside of the main ingredients? Quite a bit.

The Bloody Mary

The classic Bloody Mary Cocktail is an iconic brunch cocktail – sophisticated, versatile, with a bit of a kick. Made with vodka, tomato or spicy tomato juice, fresh lime juice, and a medley of spices and flavorings including Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, black pepper, celery salt, and lemon juice, this savory cocktail is as complex as they come.

Legend has it the Bloody Mary was invented in the 1920s or 1930s, with various stories attributing its creation to bartenders in Paris, New York, or Chicago. Regardless of its origins, Bloody Marys have become a brunch staple around the world, best known as hangover cures.

Another key characteristic of the Bloody Mary is its garnish game! From the classic celery stalk and lime wedges to more extravagant toppings like bacon strips, shrimp, or even mini burgers, the Bloody Mary is all about making a statement. A chamoy or tajin seasoning rim is also quite popular.

The Michelada

On the other side of the ring, we have the Classic Michelada recipe, a refreshing Mexican beer cocktail hailing from Mexico. An authentic Michelada is made with a cold beer (preferably a light beer like Mexican lagers), lime juice, and various sauces, spices, and peppers. It’s typically served in a chilled glass with a salted rim. Unlike Bloody Mary’s, no Michelada mix is necessary. The perfect Michelada in my book.

The most common version of a Michelada in the U.S. also includes tomato juice, hence the confusion with the Bloody Mary. The Michelada is a refreshing drink making it the perfect choice during the warm summer months.

The Michelada’s history is a bit murky, with multiple stories and regions in Mexico claiming to be its birthplace. The drink is the perfect mix of savory and spice.

The Michelada is also known for its versatility, but not because of the garnishes. From the Clamato-based Michelada Cubana to the spicier Michelada Roja, the Michelada brings a zesty kick to your brunch.

Michelada vs Bloody Mary

Both the Michelada and the Bloody Mary offer a savory and spicy kick that’s perfect for a rough morning. However, the Michelada’s beer base gives it a lighter, more refreshing quality, while the vodka in a Bloody Mary provides a smoother, more robust drink.

So which one is your favorite Mexican brunch cocktail? The Michelada vs Bloody Mary?
