Tasmanian Braddon independent MP Craig Garland says he has tested positive for cannabis at a roadside drug test, and police found a small amount of the drug in his car.
Mr Garland, a former commercial fisherman who was elected to state parliament as an independent at March’s election, told ABC Radio he had undergone a tongue-scrape test last Friday.
He said he was on his way to Montagu, in the state’s north-west, to go fishing and recorded a positive result for THC, a compound found in cannabis.
He was then asked to give an additional saliva sample, which he said had been “sent off” for testing.
“I haven’t got my results for that back yet but I’m assuming it will come back positive,” Mr Garland said.
Mr Garland said police also found a “fraction of a gram” of marijuana in his tobacco pouch.
“It was two, three, four little specks of marijuana in amongst the tobacco, that’s all I had,” he said.
“He [the police officer] asked me if I had any, and I said, ‘Oh, it’s quite possible there’s some in here,’ and I picked the tobacco pouch that was in the door and gave it to him.
“That was seized, and my vehicle was also searched. There was nothing else in there.”
He said he had not been charged with any offence.
