After a decade of build-up, Hunter X Hunter‘s Succession Contest Arc is at long last spiraling towards a dramatic climax. With all the power players in the arc looking to make their moves at Prince Halkenburg’s funeral, it’s going to be an action-packed bloodbath. Members of the Kakin royal family and their bodyguards won’t be the only ones to die, as the ultimate fate of The Phantom Troupe has been sealed.
Hunter X Hunter Chapter 405 reveals the shocking downfall in store for The Phantom Troupe. It’s been clear more members of the Troupe would die ever since Hisoka Morrow began targeting them, but now it seems none of them will be surviving. Between Chrollo Lucilfer’s death wish, the rest of the Troupes’ desire to retire, and Morena Prudo’s machinations, all signs point to a grisly end for the manga’s most popular villains.
The Phantom Troupe’s War with Hisoka is Reaching a Boiling Point
Hisoka Needs to Start Killing Spiders
Hisoka Morrow has been an existential threat to The Phantom Troupe ever since he was killed and humiliated by Chrollo Lucilfer in Heaven’s Arena. After reviving himself with Post-Mortem Nen, Hisoka became stronger than ever. Wishing to get revenge on Chrollo by murdering the entire Phantom Troupe, Hisoka began his rampage of death by killing Shalnark and Kortopi before their boss could even return the Nen he’d borrowed from them. Since then, no additional members of the Troupe have been killed, but a lingering sense of dread has persisted as the two parties have stalked each other across the Black Whale.
In their pursuit of Hisoka, the Troupe has split up, most of them wanting the pleasure of killing the Magician themselves. Feitan Portor, Phinks Magcub, and Nobunaga Hazama are hunting him together, Machi Komacine is hunting him on her own, Kalluto Zoldyck is staying close to his older brother, Illumi, and Franklin Bordeau is waiting for Hisoka to come to him. However, two of the weaker Spiders have already accepted that they’re incapable of killing Hisoka themselves, and are avoiding directly fighting him. Sadly for Shizuku Murasaki and Bonolenov Ndongo, this won’t be enough to keep them alive.
Shizuku’s fate has been sealed ever since she had her fortune told during the Yorknew City Arc. With the long-held knowledge that death is coming for her soon, Shizuku has long been the most obvious Spider to fall to Hisoka. In contrast, Bonolenov is the least-developed of the surviving Troupe members, and it’s been unclear exactly what role he would play in the Succession Contest Arc. Chapter 405 of Hunter X Hunter reveals Bonolenov to be more powerful than anyone imagined, while also placing him in a position where he’s near-guaranteed to die.
Using his Nen ability, Transformation: Metomorphosen, Bonolenov can make himself appear as anyone he’s spoken to in-person. In a reveal that explains several of the weird moments in recent chapters, Bonolenov has been impersonating various figures, including Hisoka himself, in order to stay close to Hisoka and watch him. While he’s been effective in his role as a spy so far, eliminating all who’ve threatened to expose him, Hisoka is one of the smartest characters in the manga, and it’s only a matter of time before he catches on to Bonolenov’s tricks. With Bonolenov being the least narratively important Spider, Hisoka needing to start killing Troupe members to pay off his storyline, and Bonolenov having admitted he can’t beat Hisoka, it’s only a matter of time before Hisoka squashes him.

Chrollo and The Phantom Troupe Have Lost the Drive to Continue
Chrollo Wants to Die After He Kills Hisoka
Chrollo Lucilfer is less of a man than a character. Equal parts charismatic and enigmatic, the leader of the Phantom Troupe has been a clearly troubled soul since his introduction in the Yorknew City Arc. While the recent flashback detailing the grisly origin of the Spiders revealed his motivations, it’s only in Chapter 405 that Bonolenov suggests what’s really been going on in his head.
Chrollo was broken as a child by the gruesome murder of his friend, Sarasa. His choice to become one of the world’s worst monsters, and to form The Phantom Troupe, wasn’t just done out of a desire to ensure nothing like this would ever happen to the people of Meteor City again, but as a coping mechanism. The only real things about Chrollo in the present-day are his Nen mastery, his tactical brilliance, and his love for and dedication to his family. Everything else about him is a carefully constructed character the former aspiring voice actor has taken to playing full-time to prevent himself from feeling the pain from what he’s lost, and the guilt over his own actions.
During the Yorknew City Arc, Chrollo’s failings as a leader resulted in the death of one of the Troupe’s founding members, as well as the death of Chrollo’s life-long best friend, Pakunoda. Bonolenov has realized that, ever since losing Paku, Chrollo has been more distraught than ever, and this has only been amplified by the deaths of Shalnark and Kortopi. He knows that Chrollo plans on dying in his rematch with Hisoka, not wanting to go on after he kills his worst enemy. It’s for this reason that every other non-Zoldyck member of the Troupe is aiming to kill Hisoka before Chrollo can, as they don’t want to lose their boss and friend. Bonolenov even believes it’s time for them “close the curtain on this performance.” In a view likely shared by the relatively less vicious Machi, Franklin, and Shizuku, Bonolenov thinks it’s time for Chrollo to stop acting, and for the Troupe who’ve indulged him for so many years to end the cycle of violence, just as Kurapika Kurta chose to in Yorknew City.

Morena is a Threat to Everyone Aboard the Black Whale
Morena’s Followers Are Stronger Than Feitan, Phinks, and Nobunaga
While all eyes have been on Prince Tserriednich Hui Guo Rou as the big bad of the Succession Contest Arc, Morena Prudo may be an even greater threat than her half-brother. The illegitimate daughter of King Nasubi Hui Guo Rou, and the leader of Kakin’s Heil-Ly mafia family, Morena is a cult leader who wishes to kill everyone on the planet. As they’ve hunted for Hisoka, Feitan, Phinks, and Nobunaga have become entangled in the clashes between Kakin’s three major mafia families. This has now led the Phantom Troupe’s three most powerful fighters directly into Morena’s line of fire.
Besides having control over a powerful mafia family, what makes Morena so dangerous is her Nen ability, Contagion. When Morena kisses someone, they become a Level 1 player in her game. Capable of doing this to up to 22 people at a time, each of her players gains levels by killing people, and they acquire more aura each time they level up. When a player reaches Level 20, they develop a unique Hatsu and, as has just been revealed in Chapter 405, crossing Level 50 results in a massive power-up.

10 Hunter X Hunter Fights Fans Want to See
There are many opponents fans want to see Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Leorio, and Hisoka take on.
In order to clear the path between them and Hisoka, and to prevent Morena from killing everyone on the Black Whale, Feitan, Phinks, and Nobunaga have allied themselves with the Cha-R and Xi-Yu families against the Heil-Ly Family. However, with Morena being made aware that the Spiders are coming for her by her spy, she’s only chosen to accelerate her schedule. This involves sending one of her strongest followers, the Level 62 Dogman Enhancer, to recruit someone necessary for her cause, and assembling the rest of her forces together for an attack during Halkenburg’s funeral.
As this is explained, it’s revealed that three of Morena’s fighters have reached Level 51, and become far stronger in the process. This trio also has a grudge with the Xi-Yu family, who the Spiders have just allied with, and Morena is allowing them to pursue their quest for vengeance against them. Time and time again in Hunter X Hunter, The Phantom Troupe has been used as a benchmark of power, defeating opponents like the Shadow Beasts and the Chimera Ants to display how much stronger they are than other Nen users. With the Troupe having transitioned from antagonists to protagonists, and Morena now the imposing villain being built-up by the story, the Spider is about to lose its three strongest legs to her followers.
Even if a few Spiders reach the Dark Continent alive, The Phantom Troupe will be gone forever by the end of the current arc. The ultimate downfall of the Troupe is drawing near and, although they’re villains, it’ll be sad to say goodbye to these beloved characters. All that’s left to wonder now is if Hisoka, Morena, or Chrollo himself will be responsible for their destruction.
