Dragon Ball‘s newest major villain, King Gomah, was introduced in Episode 1 of DAIMA as a devious Majin who had recently ascended to the highest throne of the Demon Realm. As the newly appointed Demon King, Gomah has absolute power over the three worlds of the Demon Realm. However, Gomah was only able to take the crown because the Demon Realm’s prior King, Dabura, was killed by the mighty Majin Buu.
After witnessing Dabura’s death through a Magic Monitor, Gomah’s trusted advisor and younger brother of Shin, Degesu, formally declares Gomah King for the first time. Degesu’s immediate recognition that Gomah was now King shows that Gomah was indisputably next in line for the crown in the event of Dabura’s death. This wasn’t something that was voted for or discussed by anyone else, it was just an immediate fact. This raises the question of just how Gomah is actually related to Dabura, or how the politics of the Demon Realm are set up to handle the line of succession.

Demon King Dabura didn’t fully realize his potential, but Dragon Ball DAIMA’s Demon Realm lore provides the perfect excuse to bring him back.
There’s Probably No Set-in-Stone Succession Plan for Demon Kings
Dragon Ball’s Demon Realm May Have a Fairly Loose Political Structure Based Mostly on Power
Dragon Ball DAIMA already revealed a lot of exciting information about the Demon Realm in just its first two episodes before the main cast even actually went there. From the method of reaching the Demon Realm to the existence of the Demon Realm’s own Dragon Balls, there’s a lot that fans learned about this previously mysterious aspect of DB lore. However, there’s still even more that has yet to be revealed about how the Demon Realm’s political structure works.
The ongoing political conflict is a major plot thread that has already informed much of the characters’ actions. Gomah’s ascension to the throne – and his desire to protect his position – is what led him and Degesu to wish the Z Fighters be turned into children in the first place. There are also a number of players in the background, such as Arinsu, Glorio and the other Kings of the three worlds in the Demon Realm, who seem not to want Gomah sitting on the throne.
In
Sandland
– another of Toriyama’s popular manga series that deals with demons – the king of the demons, Lucifer, looks exactly like Dabura, but they’re not the same character.
While the exact process of succession is unknown, there’s a bit that can still be surmised about how the Supreme Demon King’s heir is chosen. The first is that Demon Kings don’t seem to succeed eachother by birthright alone. While Dabura’s father, Abura, was the Demon King before him, there have been instances where other Demon Kings weren’t related to the previous one. For example, in Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Mira, an artificially created being made by Towa, Dabura’s sister, becomes the Supreme King of the Demon Realm. While Heroes isn’t canon to Toriyama’s original manga, this side-story at least shows that in some DB media, succession to the throne of the Demon Realm isn’t limited to blood relatives.
On the other hand, it is possible that Dabura had no blood heir to inherit his place, leaving his throne open for the taking in his absence. Gomah may have simply been his second in command, thereby making him the recipient of the crown by default. What seems most likely is that Supreme Demon Kings are simply chosen based on power – whether physical, political, or both. Instead of familial bonds, it’s likely that the real deciding factor of political power in the Demon Realm revolves around magical power.
King Gomah is Way Stronger Than He Looks
Shin Warns The Z Fighters That Gomah Isn’t to be Underestimated
Dabura was an absolute powerhouse in DBZ under Babidi’s control. He had numerous techniques at his disposal, from the ability to turn his opponents into stone with his spit, to general magical and telekinetic powers. Dabura commanded respect from the Z Fighters who had long since ascended the strength of Super Saiyans, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume he was the strongest Demon in the Demon Realm.
If the position of Demon King is truly based on power, it would mean that Gomah must have been weaker than Dabura. That by no means makes Gomah a weakling, though. When Shin first hears the name Gomah from Glorio, he comments that Gomah is extremely powerful: a high compliment coming from someone who had only just recently witnessed the powers of Majin Buu and the Super Saiyans.
A Majin that cannot be underestimated. He’s very powerful, but also very crafty.
It’s also clear Gomah has no problem aligning himself with powerful beings by offering them something in exchange (as was the case with the Legendary Namek, Neva) so it’s not impossible that Gomah worked his way to the top by cunningly making convenient alliances. It could simply be that the Demon Realm’s highest seat goes to the strongest or most powerful being in the Realm. With Dabura out of the picture, that person could very well be Gomah. The one other obvious candidate for the title of “strongest in the Demon Realm” would be Neva, but he doesn’t seem to be the type that would seek a high social position. In fact, Gomah offered to give Neva 1,000 more years of life in exchange for his help on Kami’s Lookout, inferring that he has an ability which even Neva doesn’t.

DAIMA May Have Just Introduced an Even Stronger Namekian Than Piccolo
Piccolo has long held the crown as the strongest Namekian in Dragon Ball, but DAIMA’s Neva may finally be the one to usurp his throne.
Gomah’s new status as the strongest in the Demon Realm explains why he wasn’t excited about becoming Demon King after Dabura’s death at first. Dabura’s defeat at the hands of Majin Buu meant that it was only a matter of time before he was targeted next. It wasn’t until he saw that Majin Buu had been defeated that Gomah finally felt he could rest easy and revel in his new position as the uncontested ruler of the Demon Realm.
Gomah Doesn’t Seem to Have Any Familial Relation to Dabura
Gomah was definitely next in line to the throne after Dabura, as made clear when Degesu’s first reaction after witnessing Dabura’s death was to congratulate his master on his new seat. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he has any familial bond with Dabura. There’s nothing about Gomah that indicates any blood relationship with Dabura. While he seemed angered by Babidi’s insolence in taking the Demon King as his minion, Gomah didn’t seem particularly sad that Dabura died like most children would be at the death of a parent or family member.
While he did appear to have a degree of respect for Dabura and wanted to see the King succeed in battle, Gomah was ultimately happy when Degesu reminded him that he had become the new King. If anything, Gomah was just more surprised that Dabura could be beaten in battle so easily. This further lends credence to the idea that Dabura was truly the most powerful being in the Demon Realm, so defeating him as easily as Buu did was essentially inconceivable.
While Dabura has had a sibling in other Dragon Ball media – namely, Towa – that has never been mentioned canonically in the mainline series. It’s possible that Towa could be canonically introduced in DAIMA, but until that happens, fans will have to assume that Dabura had no remaining blood family to take over the crown. Either that, or blood relation isn’t enough to secure the highest seat of power in the Demon Realm.
What is King Gomah’s Goal in DAIMA?
Gomah’s Wish Was Only be the Beginning of His Devious Scheme
Now that Gomah has become the Supreme Demon King, he holds the seat of ultimate power in his world. That placed him in a unique position of command which has already been hinted at in DAIMA. When he, Degesu and Neva attempt to leave the Demon Realm, they’re stopped by Warp-Sama, who guards the inter-dimensional space between it and the outer Universe. As Neva comments, they’re not allowed to leave the Demon Realm, but Degesu assures him that they’ve already made the “necessary preparations” (which was later revealed in Episode 3 to be an application process).
With hardly any deliberation, the interdimensional guardian grants the group passage, which differentiates it from when Glorio, Goku and Shin tried to pass later. While Warp-sama acts unsurprised by Gomah’s status, he does give him a harder time than Goku and Shin – granted, that’s largely Goku’s doing. This shows that, at the very least, Gomah has the political pull to do what most in his Realm cannot, and does command some kind of respect in his realm beyond just being a member of the 1st Demon World.

Can Goku Actually Trust Glorio in Dragon Ball DAIMA?
Goku’s always been too trusting in Dragon Ball, so he may be in trouble with DAIMA’s newest character of questionable loyalties, Glorio.
It’s still unknown how far King Gomah seeks to stretch his power, or what goals he plans to use his new seat for. However, one objective of his is clear: to secure his position as ruler of the Demon Realm from anyone who might threaten it. This is what causes him to wish for the Z Fighters to become children, in turn setting the entire events of DAIMA into motion. But his plans don’t stop there. Gomah also tells Degesu that he plans to use one of his wishes on the Earth Dragon Balls to get his hands on the Tertian Oculus, a mysterious Demonic artifact that gives its holder great power.
Not much else is known about the Tertian Oculus at this time, other than that it hasn’t been seen since Dabura’s father held the throne. The fact that Gomah would have much sooner wished for the “Evil Third Eye” first instead of making the Z Fighters children had he known he couldn’t make more than one wish to Shenlong says a lot about it. That seems to suggest that the Oculus could give Gomah a level of power that even surpasses SSJ3 Goku or Majin Buu. Gomah is already a powerful and cunning individual who will stop at nothing to ensure his claim to the throne of the Demon Realm remains unchecked.
