Let me tell you, fellow donghua enthusiasts, if you haven’t heard the news yet, buckle up because you’re in for a treat! Remember that incredible Chinese animation, Dragon Raja, based on the phenomenal novel series? Well, get ready to experience it all over again, but this time with a whole new flavor – Japanese!
That’s right! While we eagerly await Season 2 (don’t worry, I’ll get to that cliffhanger in a minute!), the wait just got a whole lot more exciting with the announcement of a Japanese dub titled Ryuzoku – The Blazing Dawn, premiering in April 2024!
Now, for those unfamiliar with the legend of Dragon Raja, let me tell you what you’re missing. This donghua is pure magic, a captivating urban fantasy that blends action, fantasy, conspiracy, and even a sprinkle of good old college life – think magic schools with a heavy dose of dragon-slaying! Originally released in August 2022, it quickly soared to the top of the donghua charts, leaving its mark alongside other heavy hitters like Jade Dynasty and A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality.
The story follows Lu Mingfei, an ordinary guy with a not-so-ordinary destiny. He’s content with his average life, crushing Starcraft matches and whatnot. But fate, as it often does, throws him a curveball – a scholarship to the mysterious Cassell College in Chicago. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it is! Except, instead of a scam, Lu Mingfei stumbles into a world of dragons, a hidden society of dragon slayers, and the realization that his seemingly normal life was anything but.
The animation itself is breathtaking, courtesy of Studio GARDEN, the same folks who brought us the later seasons of Fox Spirit Matchmaker. Each frame bursts with vibrant action sequences, from epic sword fights to thrilling gun battles. Did I mention dragons? Because yes, there are definitely dragons!
Now, back to that cliffhanger. Dragon Raja Season 1 ended with a bang, leaving us all reeling and desperate for more. Thankfully, our prayers were answered! Last August, during the Tencent Video Animation conference, the production team confirmed that Dragon Raja Season 2 is on the way! While we don’t have a release date yet, the news of Ryuzoku – The Blazing Dawn certainly helps tide us over.
The Japanese dub boasts a stellar cast, featuring Daiki Yamashita as Lu Mingfei, Ayumu Murase as Lu Mingze, and Kaede Hondo as Chen Motong. The trailer, which you can find below, gives us a teaser of the vibe that we can expect from this version.
