Telling when pets are unwell can be tricky, even for attentive owners. Over time, animals, especially cats and dogs, have developed ways to hide pain or discomfort, making it even more challenging. For a stray dog on the streets, expressing distress can be even harder. But one dog knew he had reached his limit and took matters into his own paws. The poor pup wandered around with an injured paw, enduring his pain. But one day, this resilient dog made a choice that would change everything—he sought help, surprising many in the process.
It was a routine day at Vet Vip Clinic for veterinarian Daysa Ferreira da Silva. She had just finished tending to one patient and was preparing for the next, who was patiently waiting nearby with its owner. Out of nowhere, a black stray dog appeared at the entrance, curiously peering inside.
At first, Ferreira and others assumed he was simply exploring and would soon move on. But instead, the dog limped his way to the counter where Ferreira stood, halting halfway with a clear purpose.
Ferreira immediately understood. “When he came in, he put the injured paw forward as if to say hello and to show that he was hurting,” Ferreira told The Dodo. “We were surprised because he knew where to ask for help.” Without hesitation, Ferreira guided the brave dog further inside. Trust between them was instant.
Once in the examination room, the stray willingly offered Ferreira his injured paw as if he knew she was there to help him. After inspecting the paw, Ferreira felt relieved to see that it was not a severe injury. However, wanting to ensure his overall health, she conducted a full examination.
It was a wise decision. Ferreira discovered the dog had a transmissible venereal tumor, a condition common in street dogs but entirely treatable. She was thankful the dog had come to the clinic when he did, as it was a critical intervention that likely saved his life.
Ferreira admitted him for a 30-day treatment plan that included chemotherapy, which the dog handled remarkably well. She named him Quindim, and soon, he was healthier than ever. The story didn’t end there. Word of Quindim’s incredible journey spread and the clinic was flooded with adoption inquiries. The once-lost dog was now no longer a stray; he was on the verge of finding a forever home.

A year after that pivotal day, Vet Vip Clinic shared an update on Instagram, celebrating the dog’s remarkable turnaround. “The day he conquered the world today he is full of love and cuddles with his family, Quindim has gained weight and is showing good health,” they wrote. And should any health issues arise, his family knows that Quindim has already proven he knows exactly where to go for care.
